Agreed. There was a big issue a few years ago with the Society of black lawyers trying to bring a case against Spurs for their continued use of the 'Yid' word. Spurs argued that their fans didn't mean it as a racist slur, although there were complaints from Jewish people regarding it. The Met police at the time did say that they would clamp down on it, but nothing seemed to have happened. It's a bit of a storm in a teacup, Spurs fans don't use the word in a perjorative sense, although they also don't really have a claim to be a 'jewish' club, as there are probably as many , if not more Jewish Arsenal fans in North London.

His comments were aimed at belittling and making fun of the Jewish plight, any association that comment may have with spurs is secondary and irrelevant for me

 

It's all a matter of intent. As you say, if it's used in a pejorative sense, then it's clearly offensive.
