    Coffee was originally brought into Europe by the Turks although it was cultivated in the Middle East/Arabia and Africa by Sufis especially, and particularly found its way into Vienna when they tried to invade the city and the Viennese defeated them and captured their stores where they found the coffee, and it spread out from there. Throughout the 16/17th C different countries then began to import it once trade companies had been established and fleets started to sail. It was then refined in different countries, like Italy, and the preparation process became competitive and so now many places think or claim that's where the drink originated.

    You Yanks <doh>...............Apart from over-stimulating the adrenal gland, shutting down digestive processes, excess glucose in the bloodstream, increased
    heart rate and raised blood pressure...........there are other downsides to caffeine. It causes us to lose chromium (which stabilises blood sugar levels) and
    depletes the body of Iron, potassium, zinc and B vitamins.

    Its bad **** dude, and the western world is hooked on it.

    You're thinking more of black tea which does indeed deplete the body of nutrients if consumed in too large amounts. Which is why i don't have more than a cup or two a day.

    There are actually several observational studies showing that coffee drinkers have a lower risk of death.

    In two very large studies, drinking coffee was associated with a 20% lower risk of death in men and a 26% lower risk of death in women, over a period of 18-24 years (53).

    This effect appears to be particularly strong in type II diabetics. In one study, diabetics who drank coffee had a 30% lower risk of death during a 20 year study period (54).

    Not thinking of black tea mate...............it's caffeine...............tannins in tea have their own side effects but this is about the caffeine in both.
    Cola's and other muck like that are also included. I would seriously check that website, its come from within the industry

    Seriously, it seems like every other article in Discover and pop sci has a new study on coffee where coffee consumption correlates with lower incidents of disease "x".

    Back in the 80's and early 90's everyone thought coffee must be terrible for you and all these long term studies were started. In the last few decades we've been seeing results and they almost all positive (not what the study founders were hoping to find).

    Coffee is one of the most researched drinks on the planet.

    Don't like those then there is ny times and Mayo clinic. Just about every major study has shown coffee to be better for you than people back in the 80s expected.

    Without getting too technical and specific black coffee especially has been proven to be a good choice prior to working out in particular and can help with performance intensity and duration, but it is also beneficial when playing other sport. That's for people who have healthy active lifestyles and of course caffeine can lead to health problems through over-consumption or its part in non-sensible dietary choices. If your nutritional intake is well balanced and doesn't tip over to be dominated by especially certain food groups ('bad' fats, simple carbs, unrefined / white sugar, stimulants) then there is no real to say that something like caffeine can't be a healthy part of your diet.

    It's not black coffee that's the problem anyway - that's what i drink - it's the lightly coffee flavoured fatty, sugary, milky ****e served in your average chain coffee house that's contributing to obesity and long-term health problems. Most of those drinks the main stimulant is sugar, not caffeine anyway. And we can't demonise sugar either as that has good contributions to make to a healthy active lifestyle, except when it's served up by the bucketload in those kind of drinks to sedentary people allowing them to unknowingly get through 5 times their daily intake in a medium sized frappa-latta-whatsitsname. If you stay conscious of what you're eating and what the nutrition is of what you're eating there isn't really a problem. Many people don't though and are totally unconscious about it.

    I only drink black coffee too. Grind the beans myself daily and make it in a French press on my desk. <ok>

    Those fancy Starbucks drinks are more milk and sugar than coffee. Too much milk or sugar are bad.
