...have to admit, imo he was our answer to Elvis at the time. Sure to be worth watching for those interested. Samples: Nowt to do with illicit dalliances with sheep btw Baa, humbug...
Nice one.i got it on record I like going to Liverpool and especially to the cavern.i saw the statue to Billy fury but I don't know much about his story.i will enjoy that so thanks
Bloody 'ell. First I thought you meant BBC TV C4, then C4 on radio - now I've got it....the other Channel 4 on Telly. I'll catch it later...ta.
Did some great songs. Growing up my dad always had Billy Fury on+ Ricky Nelson+Elvis+ The Platters. They think I'm weird at work liking all this stuff. They've got no style
Yeah that's what I tell em. Not forgetting the sublime Bobby Darin. What a superb voice he had. Best singer of swing.
I vaguely remember him. Apparently, a good guy, he was given the name Fury because that's how the promoters projected him as a sex object, shagging the girls. Having watched the videos, to be honest I don't get it. Paraphrasing a John Peel quote about a Pan's People recording seems equally appropriate, "These recordings are about as creative and exciting as a small carton of luke warm osterich piss."
I think it was down to the promoter Larry Parnes: there was Tommy STEELE, Billy FURY, Marty WILDE, Johnny GENTLE, Vince EAGER, Duffy POWER, Adam FAITH, Dickie PRIDE, etc. It may not all have been down to Parnes, but much was...
I went to watch Tommy Steelers playing Scrooge at New Theatre 6 years ago. He was absolutely superb,He nailed it spot on
I saw Billy Fury live in about 1973. He was on at a club which I think was called the Apollo on Holderness Road. I think it was a Thursday night. He was meant to be the star but he came on first at about 9 o'clock because he'd arranged another booking in Goole at eleven. He was very good but he was totally eclipsed by the act who was supposed to be the support. That was the then unknown Dustin Gee who was absolutely hilarious.
fury had some good tracks, which the others didn't so much, but your viewpoint needs adjusting. compare the likes of fury with what preceded them and was about at the time. if it's your first hearing, you'll be comparing them with what you've heard in the intervening 55+ years. context.
Yeah she's right mate outstanding. When I was taxi driving a picked up a theatre goer. He said Tommy Steele in Scrooge was one of the best shows he'd ever seen.
Tommy Steele had altered his name before Mr Parnes Shillings and Pence, as someone, could have been Bruce Forsythia, used to call him came along. Something to do about being in honour of his grandad, a Scandinavian whose name translated as Steel. Parses was only his conman ager which explains why he wasn't in all those photos with the rest of them with Parnes looking on rather creepily. Parnes was an odd figure. Ruthlessly exploited the artists he controlled. Someone as keen to surround himself with good-looking young lads as he was should have raised questions rather more than he did at the time.
