Honestly, I've not been dazzled by his career so far.

He did well with AC Milan when they had no major competition challenging them, with a squad including Pirlo, Pato, Thiago Silva, Kevin Prince-Boateng, El Shaawary (who at the time was touted as the next best thing), a rejuvenated Robinho and a world-class striker in Ibrahimovic. If you have that advantage above every other club in the division, frankly, you'd be underperforming if you didn't win the league.

Same thing with Juventus really - took over when he had the infrastructure, resources and players at his disposal, a core squad he inherited from Conte and has continued from there. To be fair, he surprised me when they got to the Champions League Final in 2015 because I didn't expect that, but arguably they only got that far because that squad hit its peak.

He's still only 49 though and as much as the context of his achievements haven't really wowed me, the facts are he's won three league titles and reached a Champions League final in the last 6 years.

I wouldn't be completely averse to this happening, but my initial impression is that he wouldn't do much better than what Wenger's done. So I'm hoping he's not at the top of the list!

How dazzled were you all by Wenger when he first arrived?
I'd never even heard of him.
Wasn't he managing in Japan or some ****? prior to Arsenal?

The landscape of football has changed since then and the league is more competitive now than it's ever been, so really and truly, I'd prefer to get a manager who has a decent track record previously, rather than taking a punt on someone who isn't well known and hasn't managed in a top European league.

Choosing a manager in Arsenal's position is always going to be difficult. You have got no one coming through (like Liverpool used to do) so the chances are that (unless you get lucky) you will get a dud. Happened to Liverpool after Dalglish left, Arsenal after Graham, United after Busby and after SAF, Spurs after Bill Nic and (to a lesser extent) Keith Burkinshaw, to forest after Clough.

Simeone would be first choice. And he's proven that he can cut it in a tough leagues. Allegri has had some decent achievements with juve too, there's also some talk that we're lining up the Liezpeg (spelling) manager too <yikes>

Sorry RCL, you're a nice bloke an' all, but this is absolute rubbish. We will only get a dud if we make a stupid appointment like Rodgers or Pardew. There are a host of young, hungry managers out there who have shown they have the potential to do much better at a higher level if given the opportunity and right amount of time. Equally, there are some managers out there who have already achieved a lot with minimal resources/expectations. The only way this decision will go down the pan is if the Arsenal board royally **** up.

Don't watch much Italian football but..

He won the league in his first Season managing a 'Big Club'. (Milan)

At Juventus he has won the league two Seasons in a row.

    Fairly impressive really.

No one at the time thought Rioche would be the disaster he was, no one thought Souness would crash and burn and no one thought LVG would fail at United.
No one thought AVB would be a complete disaster at Chelsea after what he did at Porto.
The additional issue is that the new manager will be constantly compared to Wenger. And that can be a huge problem.
My only pointing is that choosing the right manager, at the right time is really difficult and luck is involved imo.
Think of all the "rated" managers that are now no where.
People talk about managers like Howe but they were doing that with Owen Coyle a few years back and where is he now? The same is true of the orange tangoed bloke who used to manage Hull.

And this is exactly why I have been saying that there is absolutely no point getting rid of Wenger for somebody who can't do at least as good a job.

I've been called a Wengerite, apologist etc etc, but the fact remains, that when people were calling for wenger to be replaced with Owen Coyle, Harry Redknapp, Fat Sam, Roberto Martinez, I resisted it saying that it would be a step backwards.

There's always a risk replacing a long standing successful manager, but there are calculated risks, and then there are leaps of blind faith. A change simply for the sake of change is a reckless move. The club need to make sure they do their homework when the time comes for Wenger to step aside.

Although I agree to some extent it's impossible to predict. You cant predict how well a manager is going to do.

Wenger has shown he doesnt have what it takes anymore. Sure if he keeps going for another 10-15 years he may win the league.. he may not.

But its very hard to predict if someone is going to do better than him. Even a proven 'Top' manager may struggle in a league with United, City and Chelsea. There's no guarantees in football but Wengers unwillingness to change/adapt has made me want change for changes sake. It could be better it may very well be worse but at least it will be a break from the monotonous.

You can't predict how well a manager is going to do, but you can to some degree predict how poorly he could do, depending on the appointment. Putting somebody like Owen Coyle in charge would have been a ****ing disaster. I'm completely against the idea of a change for changes sake, and the idea that we should take a punt even if it means we'll be worse off is retarded thinking (not meant personally, but in the true sense of the word)

There are no guarantees, so you have to take a risk to some degree, but as I've said there are calculated risks and then there are blind leaps of faith. I trust that the club will take the former approach, and whilst I understand the desire for change, we shouldn't just throw it all up in the air and hope it all lands in the right place, just for the sake of change.

Obviously a manager with a history of mediocrity would be a bad idea.

Someone like Allegri would be something of a risk (he's won things but all in Italy so hard to know how well he will adapt). Someone like Howe would also be a big risk.. he could end up being another Fergsuon or he could end up being another Allardyce. Only time will tell.

My point is there's no point being scared of change because its impossible to predict how how things are going to go.

Completely agree. I don't think anybody is scared of change, it's making sure that the change we make is done with the best possible set of parameters we can achieve. Allegri would be a risk, but he's won titles, so for me that's less of a risk than Howe, who has done well with Bournemouth, but has zero experience at the top.

Dunno about that. It would be funny to piss the Spuds off, but whilst Poch is decent enough, he's shown some serious errors of judgement in managing his squad for big games imo. He seems like the sort of manager who takes a club so far, but can't get them over the line.

Klopp has done his time in the PL and proven his worth. Time for him to make the step up and join us.
