Making a triple substitution is hardly keeping it the same is it, for **** sake? Claude can't be faulted tonight, imo.

I didn't say play the "best" team against Norwich and rest players for the Liverpool. I think play the strongest possible in both matches as the team and crowd will certainly be up for it against the mighty Reds. Years ago, Liverpool themselves used about 15 or 16 players in achieving their regular League Cup, Championship and European Cup wins. It amounted to well over 60 matches in the season. So I see no reason why the Saints cannot put out their strongest team in both as I, for one, will not be happy going out in Round 3 of the FA Cup!!

The triple change happened on 72 minutes though, not 45 minutes.

Tigger is right. The second goal was coming long before it did ultimately come - I can't answer for anyone else, but I was relieved at the HT whistle going. But nothing seemed to change, either in terms of tactics or personnel, during the break.

Quite fancy Gary Rowett, but our owners are great friends with Roy Hodgson!!

Before I read back, here is my take on the game:

Tottenham deserved to win despite Saints starting brightly. It showed the limits of our side this season that are exacerbated without a Pelle style forward to use as an outlet.

Pochettin's side played a high press as expected & we had no outlet, albeit when we did we carried a threat (nice crisp passing). The sending off actually opened up the game which was good for us being behind but once the third was conceded we should have shut up shop.

As for the sending off/penalty, I cannot see how it can have been both: Redmond did foul the player initially outside the box. If he was deemed the last man it could have been a red card but then not a penalty. If he played advantage & gave a foul inside the box (it would have been harsh in my opinion) but a penalty & not a sending off. I think both is nonsensical.

Foul occurred outside of the box, and Redmond then fell behind Alli who easily got a shot off that was going off target regardless. Penalty maybe, red card absolutely not.

Our trouble is still going behind though, once that happens we don't seem to ever look like getting back in games .

It was 1-1 at HT ... there's not much need to change things at that point.

No Southampton FC weren't, Spurs were better, much better.

What happened was it took Spurs 20 minutes to get to grips with Southampton by which time their midfield were bossing it as the Southampton players were struggling with Spurs strength and power. Southampton's Boufal for all his Fancy Dan stuff was totally ineffective and JWP had a poor game.

At half time Southampton should have taken off Boufal and added another midfielder such as Højbjerg. I saw Redmond's pull but didn't think it was in the box and Fonte's tackle with both feet off the ground was identical to the one that got Vardy sent off.

I came away not disillusioned or unhappy at the result as these days I am so disconnected from Southampton Football club and their players as they are all so transitory. In truth I have stopped caring and was amazed at the anger of some fans as I made my way from the stadium. If you rely on a football club for the success in your life you are going to be disappointed.

These days I watch Saints totally as a neutral, the emotional attachment has gone. So no more disappointments or frustrations. My passion for the team has been eroded away.

I am as partisan and passionate as I would be if I was watching Gillingham play Carlisle and that hurts more than Southampton getting stuffed..

Agree with nearly all. Last two paragraphs threw me, otherwise we are on the same song sheet.

Yep I agree with St Godders. Maggie's turning in her grave [emoji6]

Thinking back I'm also amazed how well we kept Erikssen out of the game. We just sadly allowed Alli into it a bit too much.

the worst thing about tonight for me, was having to sit with my 15 year old son having to listen to (not see because I kept him looking forwards) to some grown men around us slagging each other off and threatening to punch each other or meet outside to punch each other. Embarrassing and totally unacceptable. Season ticket holders too, so Saturday should be fun.

Pisses me off more than anything else. My son shouldn't have to witness that.

I was ashamed tonight to be a Saints fan and it had nothing to do with what was on the pitch.

    On this game:

First 15 minutes excellent and then Spurs took control when we had a breather. However we defended pretty well and they only had two chances first half (they were a bit like watching us with alll that possession and nothing being created/taken).

Second half we switched off at a corner (was that VvD?) and then the penalty incident and sending off made it very difficult. 3-1 only happened because we tried to commit bodies forward.

Not at all.... Aimed generally at people on here that have been discussing the situation tonight.

Apologies if you thought that. Wasn't sure if the rules, but in my eyes it kind of balanced that Kane went for the Ozzie rules approach after the penalty decision.
