I know it's been discussed on here before, but there's still a nagging part of me that would love to see the good player part of Saido Berahinio at Saints.

I know some people have speculated about his issues, but if we could calm down any issues and get him to recapture his form from a few seasons ago, I'd be interested.

    (Prepares to be shot down...!!!)

I wonder how he and Redmond would get on together. They both seem pretty petulant.

I dunno. Maybe I'm wearing Saints-colored glasses, but Redmond doesn't seem nearly as flawed to me. He is definitely guilty at times of letting his emotions get the best of him during games which can hurt his performance. But he seems to care about winning, and about the team. He just lets it manifest itself in unhealthy ways at times. And it's just on the pitch. He seems alright off the pitch.

Berahino seems like he has deeper life issues with the fitness problems, drinking, nitrous, etc.

Both are still young, and have plenty of time to get straightened out. Of course it's possible they don't as well. But I think a good manager/teammates/club have more ability to fix on-pitch performance issues than life issues.

Saints are great believers in getting players with good character, The exception proved the rule.

I don't really follow things well enough to know if these are actually issues associated with him in particular or more general issues.

However, I remember watching a Football Focus in the last couple of years about Saido and him being a devout Christian and the article seemed based around how level headed he was. I guess this means nothing in the grand scheme, but his reported/rumoured indiscretions/issues seem a bit vague to me. Almost like the club is aiming to discredit him as he wants to leave them. If he was going to cop a strop, I'm sure he could do a Grealish and do it properly in the media, etc

Lee Barnard? He was certainly a character, not sure how "good" he was though.

Thanks for the tip off. I had a good laugh reading Grand Old Team on my 10 hour drive home.

Best one was (something like) that Koeman's relationship with Van Dijk would influence him wanting to go there. He's probably right, just not in the way that he thinks.

I picked up on that as well.... I'm torn between the temptation of an exciting talent that Puel has once before got the best out of, and worrying about a destructive ego who can upset a troop of monks on a peaceful mission.

Not sure about Arfa, a loan move seems low risk but I think I'd rather see more of Sims and Hesketh when he's back from injury.

Ben Arfa is over six years older than Berahino, would no doubt demand higher wages than Berahino, has already had to be shipped out of the PL once before, and would be moving to his fifth club in less than three years.

I'm not sure I want either of them. But if you forced me to pick, it's Berahino every time. At least with Berahino, there's the possibility to someone getting hold of the guy, giving him a kick up the backside, and ultimately turning him into a quality PL striker. Before selling him to Liverpool in three years time for £30m, if it's us.

Difference is Ben Arfa has been very good for several periods throughout his career. Berahino had one good spell and, because he is young and English, got completely over-hyped. Berahino's main problem isn't his attitude or off the field antics, it's that he just isn't as good as football as the media made out!
