Which for me, is why Maradona is the the Greatest of All Time (in the time that I've been watching footy). Evidence being Napoli and Argentina. He's becoming more and more underrated as time goes by tbh. IMO I have not been impressed/amazed as much at watching what unfolded when he was on the ball, than at any player before or since. Now people older than me could use the same argument for Pele, but for me the Napoli and Argentina argument sets Maradona apart.

Having said that, I agree completely with Organic :bandit:

I expect us to put out our second 11 for this one. Actually we have only just about got a second 11 come to think of it. Thanks for the reminder of MacCormick's past. He gets hammered for it when in front of every home and away crowd he meets. I hope he doesn't get that at Anfield as well. Trust me when I say he regrets every minute of his stupidity. Goodwillie can't score for us no matter what he tries. Good game for him to come good in.

The wonderful TV people couldn't have made the kick off time for the game any worse if they had tried hard. Our people are used to having to travel but for this one, given it's a bit of a day out, but they could have been a bit kinder. To travel on the day will mean something like a 3 to 4 am set off time. Rest assured though the travelling contingent will come in decent numbers and will be heard. You are right about the payday thing though and it does come at just the right time with the window of opportunity open. Promotion is the priority although beating you and getting another big boy in the next round wouldn't go amiss either. I just hope it is a decent showing whatever happens.

You know that most Cities have a prem club favoured in it by a majority. I think Liverpool are the one in Plymouth. Makes a change from plastic Man U fans. Think it is a hangover from your more glory days of bygone years.

    As a midfielder? Seriously?

As a midfielder alonso is still doing it long after gerrards legs made us all groan watching him for us never mind la galaxy.

Alonso was imo a true cm, he ran further every game, passing was awesome, but his tackles were tough and game awareness was absolutely workd class and thats ehy two absolute giant clubs signed him.

My point once more was about cms being pushed up like fabregas, gerrard and now pogba, alli etc. They lose that discipline and game nouse imo.

Nobody is saying gerrard is not outrageously talented and brilliant.

Im just saying if i was offered only one i'd want alonso most just like real madrid wanted... and bayern. But then i like a proper cm who stays with the ball.

Its sinful seeing guys who should be passing it jogging 20 yards up the pitch to wait for a donkey to pass it to them.

Btw this is why lfc are missing coutinho. He stays with play... even as a no 10.

Agree with MITO - alonso was by far a better CM than Gerrard. That's not because Gerrard didn't have the ability, it's simply because Gerrard wasn't coached in that position. He was coached to utilise his physical ability and his dynamism rather than discipline and intelligence.

Gerrard was a world class attacking midfielder but he was not great as a CM. you only have to see him play as a DM when he was here. Quality on the ball but awful defensively/positionally.

You want a game changer you want Gerrard. You want someone to control midfield and let others do the work you want Alonso.

Both brilliant players, but Gerrard every time for me. Had that moment of brilliance about him and more often than not got us out the ****e. Can't say same for Alonso.

I was introduced to John Solako a few years ago, play golf with him regular..
He was part of the coaching team last year, he's told me a few stories about him..
In short Pardew's a twat of the highest order..

yes thats it exactly. coaching and there being zero desire to do the othe rhalf of the job in general in british players. They seem to eithe rbe a scott parker type of a look at me i'm great type.

gerrard was bloody awesome player in 2000-2003 or so with hammana etc but rafa certainly just pushed him right on. I think rafa also over played him and knackered his legs BTW.

of course gerrard was LFCs most inspirational and talented player in 25 years but as a pure midfielder I'd want alonso first.

that guy always seems to be a nice enough guy but just didn't quite make it at the time, nearly had a breakthrough but injuries or lack of form stopped him

delighted. I never rated him at all and was shcoked newcastle didn't fall apart under him.

mind you he's failed at a club where he should be afforded every possible advanatge and got to an fa cup final so it really is a spectacular failure and they simply can't defend. They were in trouble so.... new man will need a couple defenders and they will be fine.

Looking at Goodwillie's criminal history its safe to say Plymouth's scouts care little about moral standards.

Gerrard being put in attacking midfield got the best out of him, I'm not sure why you look at him being put in attacking midfield as a negative. He was given freedom to do what he does best, win games single-handedly.

Inter Milan, Chelsea & Real Madrid wanted Gerrard, just because he didn't leave doesn't mean they didn't want him. I guess loyalty isn't seen as a valued trait anymore.

Let's not forget in 2008 the only clubs in for Alonso were Juventus who signed Poulsen instead and Arsenal who were only willing to pay £14m for him. Chelsea bid over double that for Gerrard 3 years earlier. Not knocking him because he is a fantastic player but at their best but in my eyes there is only one winner, and that man is Gerrard who will go down as one of the premier league and Liverpool's best ever players.

I said midfielder. Since when is an attacking midfielder not classed as a midfielder?

Wasn't following the whole thread - just saw someone mentioning Gerrard as a top class CM which I disagree with.

Gerrard was one of the most complete midfielders there ever was - genuinely world class and single handedly carried our team for years.
