The UK government says it is "disappointed" after the European Court of Justice said the "indiscriminate" collection of data was against EU law.

EU judges said communications data could only be retained if it was used to fight serious crime.

Its verdict came after a legal challenge to the UK government's surveillance legislation.

The challenge was initially championed by Brexit Secretary David Davis, who was then a backbench Conservative MP. Mr Davis, who had long campaigned on civil liberties issues, left the case after Theresa May appointed him to her cabinet in July.

Thankfully the ECJ will have no authority in the UK after Brexit.

Thankfully there are politicians like David Davis who are prepared to fight for people.

David Davis is doing a great job ensuring Brexit means Brexit, he respects the will of the people.

As far as I know the ECJ is independent of the EU. even Russia is answerable to it.

    Don't think so.

The European Court of Justice is the judicial institution of the European Union.

Agreed - I was thinking of the European court of human rights, my mistake.

Can we all stop feeding the troll please? I don't want someone wishing the far-right into power posting regularly on our boards.

Well we could focus on their inadequacies to counter it - such as this -

Scottish Tory MSP Jamie Greene showed how apt his surname was this week when he used Twitter to attack the SNP on their record on Telecommunications since coming to power
    stupid tory.jpg

What the idiot managed instead was to embarrass his own party - he had no idea that Telecommunications is a reserved matter, and all he succeeded in doing was highlight the Tories' own poor performance. His attempts to hide his mistake by deleting the tweet were in vain... <laugh>

It must be getting harder and harder for them to find good staff. :)

Let's get children back to work while we're at it. Workhouses, debtors' prisons, etc. etc.

More than likely - he's the obnoxious lizard who recently put a hold on all appeals against DWP sanctions in Glasgow, preferring instead to have his staff focus on increasing the number of sanctions imposed before Christmas. After closing down two Jobcentres in Glasgow, and forcing JSA recipients to walk for up to seven miles for their appointments - or spend their pittance on bus fares - he must have been rubbing his hands in glee at the thought of all the possible no-shows & sanctions for being late. He's nothing more than an IDS clone.

Perhaps he should repay every bit of sick pay he's ever received, give back every penny of holiday pay he's enjoyed, and donate his entire pension fund to the needy. Just think how "exciting" an opportunity that would be for him.

That's called 'putting your money where your mouth is', Mr Green. Or did you just mean 'other people'?

What an utterly despicable Westminster government we have - there is simply no way they can justify treating citizens in this manner. <grr>

Left wing propaganda, professionally done. it would be interesting to hear from the DWP's side. It is utterly correct that claimants face sanctions if deemed fit enough for work. Unfortunately there will always be a small number of mistakes, without examination it is hard to judge this case.

Generally there has been a vast number of people suddenly fit enough to work when faced with a test.
