incidentally... if we lose our next two games we would still be on higher points than in 2013/14

chelsea are on a trand for 96 points. their form is supreme at this point even if there is a certain amount of grinding going on for last 2/3.

We are hanging on the coat tails but thats just fine by me. we are after doing pretty ok this season thus far even if the bournemouth loss was poor.

Not crying over spilt milk but this shows how we could (should!) have been in a better position if we had not unnecessarily lost 5 points (won against Bournemouth and really piss poor West Ham).

Chelsea will have a dip (fingers crossed) during the season and we should be ready to capitalise.

Just a question about Mane and his assists, you have him on 4 yet some websites have him on 6? Premier league have him on 4 assists so out of interest I did a bit of cross checking and following links.

One of the of the Mane assists that the premier league does not list is for him being fouled for a penalty in the Sunderland game, for me winning a penalty is clearly assisting in the scoring of a goal and if the bellends at the premier league cannot see that, well it sort of sums up how it has become just about business for them not football.

The other assist missing is the second goal in the west ham game. Some people might say that the goalie flapped at the cross so no assist for Mane but I then read this on the premier league website

"The basic definition of an assist is simple: three points are awarded to the player from the goalscoring team who makes the final pass before the ball finds the net.
However, when the path of that final pass is interrupted, an assist can sometimes require review before the FPL points are confirmed.
The rules state that if an opposing player touches the ball after the final pass before a goal is scored, significantly altering the intended destination of the ball, no assist is awarded.
The key here is the intent of the player supplying the pass and the intended destination of the ball.
The assist awarded to Manchester United’s Zlatan Ibrahimovic (£11.8m) for Marcus Rashford’s (£6.8m) goal against Watford is a good example of how these rules are interpreted.
Ibrahimovic’s cross rebounded off a defender, deflecting it back into Rashford’s path. That touch off the defender did significantly alter the path of the ball but, crucially, it was not seen to change its intended destination or target.
The Swede’s cross was clearly aimed at Rashford at the near post and, via the defender’s touch, eventually reached this area and its target. The assist was therefore awarded."

They then follow up that explanation with this
"We saw this with James McArthur’s (£4.9m) goal for Crystal Palace against Stoke City on Sunday.
Jason Puncheon (£5.5m) was awarded the assist because it was adjudged that he intended to play a cross into the box for an attacking player to convert.
The touch by the Stoke defender was not deemed to have significantly altered the intended destination of the cross, that is the crowded penalty area.
McArthur picked up the ball via the cross and the defender’s failed clearance and scored the goal.
In this example, the intent and the extent of the touch off the defender combined to reward Puncheon with the assist.
Had the defender’s touch been significant enough to divert the ball to a player deemed to have not been an intended target, no assist would have been awarded."

    Links to all three goals
    1 Rashford

    2. Macarthur

    3 Origi

So to sum up, this started as a quick query about where you get your stats but has now turned into an interesting question of : why the feck has the premier league not awarded Mane the assist for that goal?

The PL are ****s #desperate to prop up Man Utd's flops that's why

Ibra's cross hit the first man, but he wanted Man Utd to score so anything that happened afterwards was an assist <laugh>

Yeah but at least we won last two. We can only try our best each game and continue in this learning... if klopp really believes ther are learnings from the fact that lallana is a serial bottler and wijnldum and origi could have tried any harder to hide from any challenge.

We have players who do not relish a physical battle. Origi and Wijnaldum are amongst those. They do however bully weak opposition and we can have a sackful of goals then!!

On the charts: they are very informative on comparing previous seasons at a given point. But the predictions on the final points tally are rarely right at any point. This is because that prediction is based on form over all* previous matches and do not take into account recent good or bad form.

you are right. they are only a are we ahead or behind kind of thing. if we are currently on for 83 points but last year at the same time it was 64 points it tells me we can acheive something rather than be playing catch up. the points predictor calculation does vary wildly from game to game but really it can set expectation.

The main part is in any group of 4 games you can **** up once and still get to 4th... its really all about how you pick yourself up after a set back. After burnley we drew with spurs then won 4 in a row.

Since bournemouth we drew and then won 2 in a row.

thus far we've not had that really bad run.

    Yep. Fingers crossed

So far it looks likely that

More than 70 points will be needed for 4th place.

The teams fighting for CL and Europa places look to be sorted already as the gap between 6th and 4th narrows but that between 6th and 7th widens.

Unless the closest teams (LFC and City) cut the gap to Chelsea very quickly the fight to the end of the season for LFC City and Arsenal will only be retaining that top 4 place.

More than other seasons, with the bunching up of the big teams, the fight for a CL place could go right to the last match.

yup, no side below utd look capable of putting a run together so far. one like southampton may emerge but thus far i can't see it.

1st is a big gap but not impossible for anyone to overhaul yet. its up to chelsea to continue the run
    2-5th is covered by 3points.
utd had got themselves gapped but have putted back to 3 points off 5th

this all means 2nd to 6th is 6 points which again is nothing at this point.

its similar at the bottom, the gap hasn't opened yet but the bottom 5 seem to be very likely to be the final bottom 5 just on form and on ability shown thus far.

january will be big for a lot of teams.

We got 72 points 3 seasons ago and came 5th, so I think you need to up your benchmark top 4 number

Basically Ibra intended to have the ball go over Rashford's head and bounce it off the Watford player into Rashford's path. <ok>

"Amazing Rashford Goal"? Was that video uploaded by Mathh?

I honestly don't think a low 70s will be enough this year. It might even need >80 points.
