Tuesday night sees an exclusive from The Mail, revealing what was alleged to have been said. The newspaper reporting that Jonjo Shelvey is alleged to have called Wolves player Romain Saiss a ‘smelly Arab’. FFS the next time an Australian calls us poms or an American calls us limey's I'll be straight onto the police
"Smelly" and "Arab" neither word is abusive, you use **** which is, these words are purely descriptive, our society goes too far finding abuse in more mild circumstances, 5 matches and £100,000 fine plus education is just way beyond the bounds of a proportionate response by the FA, I do hope as well that the FA now record all league matches and get an analysis of all foreign players comments as I am sure there is far worse being said in French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, Russian, Serbian, Latvian, Polish and so on.

I refuse to believe that Shelvey said "smelly Arab", I could believe an aggressive angry footballer saying "black ****" in the heat of the moment, but "smelly Arab" sounds like something Julian Clary would say. It really is the gayest insult ever, kinda like "silly black boy" or "naughty little Indian".
Calling someone a smelly arab is undoubtedly racist. To suggest otherwise is ridiculous. If that's not racist, then what is? Or are people just saying racism is okay? Or it was said in the heat of the moment so therefore it doesn't count? If so, at what point or situation does it start to count? And, yes, lots of other offensive remarks are just washed over. Bald people, old people, young people, rich people, poor people, women, men, whatever. Ugly people are probably the most discriminated against group of people in the world and they get zero acknowledgement of their disadvantage in life. It doesn't make any particular racist remark acceptable though does it?
It's certainly designed to be offensive. Where do you want to draw the line though? Supporting Sunderland is not a race or an ethnicity. Maybe everyone should just try being nice to each other?
