Just look at his goals, about 500 come in friendlies and about 300 in competitions that were not even professional/proper leagues, he has history rewritten to cover up the fact that he was not as good as he is hyped to be. I saw a comparison the other day that suggested Giroud has a better strike rate when you only consider competitive goals.
He was the greatest player of his generation regardless of his personality. Pele was likewise the greatest player of his generation, but very difficult to compare. Ronaldo and Messi are the two stand out players of this generation, and it is my opinion that Ronaldo just abot shades it..
I never really considered his goals mate, but he was a class act in his day, just like Cruyff, Bekenbaur, Charlton, Best Moore, etc, etc. You could argue that Maradona relied on drugs to get him through games? there's loads of if's and but's and it's all about opinions, but i would class Pele as a fraud either.
There's loads mate and we all have our favourites, you could probably rattle out 20+ names who would be up there for best player, it's a very subjective subject. A personal favourite of mine would be Bobby Moore, not flamboyant like Pele or Maradona or Ronaldo, but still a brilliant player. I'd also put Ryan Giggs in the same category.
George Best could have undoubtedly have been classed in the all time great category had he not been a piss artist... He had the natural ability to match anyone I have ever saw..
George Best was probably the greatest player I saw as a kid, always looked forward for Match of the Day them days just to see the guy play.. A genius with the ball, no doubt about it and scored some brilliant goals.. This is worth a watch..
