Many apologies for your interesting post getting buried. It seems to have frightened some people.

Thanks for posting it anyway. It could have made for an interesting conversation, if only the kids weren't still up.

It seems to be a London thing.

Saying something isn't necessarily grown up or childish.
Repeating something back and saying "I know you are but what am I?" is definitely the latter.

It's a complicated mess and it looks like few lessons have been learned from the other exchanges in the region and another vacuum is about to be created if they don't put a strong, supported leader in and try for a puppet.

If you know something of the area, you could maybe save me googling. The reports seem to point to people being proud of being Syrian, but am I right in thinking, the borders were drawn up by the Brits in the 1920's? If so, how does that square up?

It strikes me that the west seem to miss that the people tend to be tribal rather than regional, so simply gaining land is generally the wrong objective.

    Sadly I don't.
Closest I have come is living with bedouin in Egypt for a few weeks. I believe you are right that the middle east is formed from a carve up of land a long time ago. I don't think that precludes national pride, there are several newer/ similar aged countries elsewhere whose people are proud of their country.

Bedouin aren't interested in holding land which is mostly desert and concern themselves keeping access to water. When I was there it was only a few years after Israel had returned sinai to the Egyptians so it was an incredible experience led by my Egyptian friends quest for hash.

I always feel that a map that shows the habitable areas of these countries rather that a block of area would be more useful to understanding them.

A look at the background and players in the Qatar - Turkey pipeline and the Iran pipeline further north from the Persian Gulf and across Cyprus to Greece makes interesting reading.

Dim remainers just dont give up

Russian hackers "probably" swayed the EU referendum vote in favour of Brexit, a former Labour minister has claimed in the Commons.
Leading Remain campaigner Ben Bradshaw questioned the validity of the result in June, claiming people were underestimating the extent of cyber warfare by Russian President Vladimir Putin.

How they can hack a vote is beyond me

Decent read from yesterday about the Syrian crisis (until the inevitable pie chucking started <laugh>)

Not a subject I have any real knowledge of, so I actually found that quite informative for once <yikes>

It doesn't say that they hacked the actual vote.

I haven't read The claims, but I suspect they're suspected of hacking into websites and influencing the vote in other ways.

I'm not saying there's anything in it. But a divided Europe would certainly suit Putin.

There's no specific claim, as there's no evidence mate.

He's basing his comment on the fact it appears Putin DID play a part in Trumps victory and has chucked £23m at Le Pen (via his mate) to fund her campaign, so his assumption is that he'd have tried to have an influence on Brexit. It's probably a fair assumption but what form it took and what level of influence it actually had is anyones guess. I think the non dom Billionaire media owners did the job amply well themselves.....

The Germans are also fearful that he'll try and interfere in their GE aswell, as a destabilised Europe suits his ends.
