Tell you what Bernie, next season don't go to City on your own. Join me and my mates, come for a few drinks before the game. Most of us are in our 50s but we don't act old.
    The offer is there anyway.
Full credit to you mate for sharing your story<cheers>

That is surprising. But you have now actually both 'come out' on this board because of this thread. I don't know if either of you are regular posters, but if not, then you may feel more comfortable from now on.??

But is that any different to the black friend in the 80's we all knew who would laugh along at the N word? Would be really interested in how else he was suppose to respond.

I do believe you are right. Maybe we should have a Not 606 sponsored 'coming out' day. Go through the 92 + teams, everyone comes out together. may get half a dozen brave enough, but then its done... Go for it Drew, you actually could make a historical name for yourself from this.

The media won't be happy until they have a PL player come out. They've been looking for this for years to write all the stories.

I think the media are more to blame than the fear of crowd abuse for the fact that gay sportsmen and women have a hard time coming out.

It should not be a big deal but the media cannot wait for a gay man to come out in the Premier League. The first man to come out as a current professional will never hear the end of it. He'll have hundreds of interviews from hundreds of news outlets. He'll always be referred to as "Joe Bloggs, the first gay Premier League player" and he could be the best in the business but he'll never get that recognition because in 50 years he'll be remembered as the first man to come out of the closest as a Premier League player.

It's not a big deal, whatsoever. It shouldn't even be news.

It would probably help if a dozen players came out at once, to avoid any individual being labelled as you've suggested.

Spot on, the media are the ones questioning why there isn't an openly gay player, looking to blame anyone and everyone without realising that they themselves are the pretty much the only reason.

Yep, the idea that there are 3 thinking about doing it together is a good thing but it's a shame that it has to be this way.

This weekend's Sunday Supplement on Sky will have Gary Neville on the programme because he's quite frankly fed up with the media and the way they twist things players and pundits say. Will be interesting because Nev often is spot on with what he says.

"Player X, one of the first openly gay Premier League players, etc"

    They'll cram it in somehow.

Agreed, but football is supposed to be egalitarian and played in an arena where all that counts is your ability and that you play for the team. A players sexuality plays any part whatsoever in that equation. All that's missing is a personality big enough to smile and throw the bananas/dildos back into the stand when they are thrown at him, and skilful enough to silence the opposition fans and win trophies fir his club. A gay John Barnes, basically. After gay football jesus has being playing for a while the idea that who a player chooses to **** is a matter of consequence will disappear forever.
