Yaya Toure ( a non-drinking Muslim) how do you unintentionally consume enough alcohol to be more than twice the legal limit?

I, and a colleague, took part in some 'experiments' to test how you are affected by alcohol some years ago. I think he's talking pants.
Not knowing you're x2 over the limit is pretty impossible. Even if you did not taste it, or never had alcohol in the past, you'd feel very strange and should not be getting in a car.

So many myths around drinking. Just because he may not've drunk before doesn't mean he'd have a higher reading due to no tolerance, quite the opposite. Effects may seem subjectively increased, ability to process and excrete the alcohol would be a dam sight better than this 59yr old.

    Actually...

Many moons ago, my practically teetotal wife, whilst on a big family holiday, became so drunk she had to be helped back to our room.
How did this happen, you may well ask, when she had only had soft drinks?

My wife LOVES glacé cherries, and would eat the cherries the "drinkers" had in their various alcoholic beverages.
After a couple of hours my wife began to feel "strange". As my brother in law and I helped her out of the bar, we were defending her honour, explaining to those that commented that she hadn't taken a drink of alcohol at all.
It actually took us, as a family, a few days to work out that she had got legless as a result of the alcohol contained in the cherries she had eaten. <laugh>

Consuming alcohol regularly does induce production of alcohol dehydrogenase (an enzyme which breaks down alcohol) in the liver so a non-drinker would take longer to lower blood alcohol levels. However, you'd still have to drink the alcohol to get a high reading in the first place. I can't believe you could consume that much alcohol without being aware of it...in fact a non-drinker would feel even stranger after drinking. Some people do naturally produce alcohol so need less to achieve high levels than a normal person.

If someone did ply him with drink, they should be thoroughly ashamed....awful thing to do to a non-drinker.

Feeling drunk is not the same as being over the limit.
It's a complex thing, the way the body trys to deal with this 'poison' we've given it.
There are genetic, age and (sorry ladies) sex factors but actually the body fairly consistantly processes 1 unit per hour. The subjective behaviour is fascinating, in the experiment some were given none or little alcohol but because of the colour and taste acted quite drunk. Those who drink large amounts regularly often suffer little in the way of hangovers, which they see as a positive, it's not. The body learns how to cope but it doesn't mean that because you feel sober your reactions and judgement are not impaired. There was a brilliant programme on tv in the 70s which had motorcyclists going around a course, but drinking a unit of alcohol each time. Even after the equivilent of half a lager their times and agility were affected.

One of the saddest/strangest things I observed was a lifetime heavy drinker pleased it now took only a pint to get him very merry. It meant liver damage and, as he proved, death if he continued to drink.

Right, off to get the shiraz sorted for tomorrow's game. Human beings eh?

Just watched the second part of "Muslims like us" after watching the first part last night. Absolutely compelling viewing and although I am pretty harsh on the Beeb I would say it was probably program of the year for me. Well worth watching.

Just seen it. The nights have been very light for the last few days. Missed the super moon before because it was so cloudy, so pleased to see it before we wave goodbye.

Sadly, having looked out of the window at 19:09 it is white and small, being higher in the sky. These things have their moments.
