    Hi PS
Can you clarify the mode position for Arsenal again as you re-stated it's 1st, is that correct?
what is Arsenal's average position for the same period. Thanks.

Like me you clearly understand maths and that mode and average can give entirely different answers.
For example there are 20 possible end positions in PL and a team could over a 20 year period, be 1st 3 times and end up in all the other places 17 times, with some doubling up of positions. Yet the mode is 1 but the average is far far lower

That's why the average gives a more accurate picture <ok>

Using the Mean is often the best if the data is approx normal (in the maths sense) but the Mode can be a better average if the data has an odd shape. Especially if you have discrete numbers like finishing positions and you want to place a bet on where a club is likely to finish (which is a similar point to where this discussion started). Say over ten years Chelsea finished first three times, second four times, third once and 17th twice. The mean is about fifth and the mode is second. If you could get equal odds for them finishing second or fifth the next season I reckon second would be a much better bet.

Arsenal's mode over all time is 1st, median is 6th and mean 8.7. The mean is dragged down by your early years where you basically didn't trouble the scorers before your first appearance as champions in the 30s and a bit by the awful period between your 50s and 70s titles.
Spurs have 3rd as the mode, 10th as the median and 12.2 as the mean (again dragged down by the early years).

Looking at the data is a big reminder of how open the league used to be: Three of Arsenal's titles came after bottom half finishes the previous season and Spurs won the league the season after being promoted.

Must be my screen ... I've read it 3 times and put it through Google translate which comes back with ..

    ^%$)*&^%£ &*%$£(() @~*%$^~ &^£~@ &^%$$~@@~@

... which is, rather bizarrely, very similar to what I kept getting when reading it <laugh>

If you're going to try and Wum, at least try to get your facts straight, you dick. Our previous premiership game was against Swansea - we won 5-0. And our last game before yesterday was against CSKA - we won that 3-1. <doh>

Yeah but we're talking about results worth knowing about.

You drew against us then lost to Chelsea and United.
