    Obviously none of you are mathematicians.
    The common meaning of average is indeed the arithmetic mean but in maths there are lots of ways of calculating averages and the mode is definitely the right method in this case.
    The result for Arsenal going back for any number of seasons above 5 is always 4 meaning that Arsenal are more likely to finish fourth than in any other position.
    That is really quite good by the way and indeed better than Spurs.
    But it is a fact.

    I suspect HIAG has a PhD in Applied Mathematics which he studied part time while reading Law at Cambridge.

    It comes in handy when he's counting out how many chips to serve each customer.

    Actually this is wrong - my data only went back to the war. Arsenal won the league many times before that and the mode over all time is actually first!
    Spurs' mode is 3rd over all time and 5th in the PL.

    So you can use the average to say that Arsenal's position over the last 5 years is 3rd and that the mode over our entire history is 1st.

    Much better tactic to spend all your strength trying for first and be caught on the line for second than to be out of the race for first and catch a tiring second on the line.
