You can buy a decent quality server with an unlimited 1gb pipe for about 100 quid a month. If the 1gb pipe gets filled up and you are making more than £100 a month from advertising then you keep adding servers. These things are not very CPU intensive so it's just bandwidth that is the bottle neck.

    No.

Pirated movies are downloaded to your local storage for playback via any pirate site of your choice. Costs them little to nothing because you are taking a copy of a static file that you play from your own local storage at any time of your choice.

For a site to offer new/pirated movies on immediate play (no download) and to play it in HD at an acceptable speed needs serious hardware and therefore serious investment.

    See the difference?

    Building 7 is still wobbly.

Aye, that's what high volume sites like Amazon do. Ya fanny. You probably think Amazon uses databases like Oracle/SQL Server to track customers. They don't.

A high volume site playing HD movies on demand needs very serious hardware to deliver it.

Gambol, is it really HD quality?

If they ripped movies to 700MB (which is quite common on torrent sites, one CD size), they could stream to 2000 users with a total upload speed of 200MB/second according to my calculations.

Looks HD on her iPad. The friends that told me about this site watched the Lego movie with their kid on an HD TV with no lag.

Torrents have no relation at all to live play, so yer numbers mean nothing.

Delivering HD content requires bandwidth, all the processing of that data to display is on the client (your Ipad).

I know just saying that's how much bandwidth you'd need to stream to that number of people if you ripped the movies to small files.

Aye, I would think it'll be blocked pretty soon.

But, as from my OP, I canny work out what they get from it. I really canny see what money they make from letting us watch new/recent movies for free. I did catch summat called "adcash" related to it, but, without your details it can't get money from you. NOTE: hence why don't go near this website on something as weak as a browser on Windows.

I thought that - it's either a massive two fingers up at the major production companies or, going into mindy territory here, it's a ploy by the production companies to catch millions of people watching the stuff for free so they can prosecute them......

You are almost right, but still wrong.

Bandwidth is equal to it's least bottle neck, which is in your house.

A server, serving a high volume of clients for anything requires serious hardware. Full stop.

Serious hardware is connected via internet backbones at the best possible bottle neck.

In the end, a poor server regardless of it's least/best connection pipe will perform poorly.

A high power server is best placed to deliver (and re-deliver on TCP vagaries in the pipe) a movie to you. It is also best placed to handle high volume requests and to farm out requests to farm servers.

Finally, all the processing (in terms of a video steam) is not done on the client (your iPad) at all or ever.

The client is merely showing frame by frame what has been delivered.

    As do things like Skype.
