If you could make up a team of starting XI from Arsenal's history including a subs bench, who would you pick? Age immaterial since this is Fantasy Footie I'll kick this off with my choice - Seaman Dixon Bould Adams Winterburn Overmars Brady Pires RVP Henry Bergkamp Subs: Chesney Mertesacker Keown Ljundberg Rocastle Willshire Wright Walcott As many will know I'm c**p at positioning so I hope I have the above covered. Over to you pals
Any particular reason there is no Viera, even on the bench? Ashley Cole deserves the bench at least imho.
..............Seaman Dixon...Adams..O'Leary..Cole Ljungberg..Vieira..Fabregas..Pires .............Bergkamp................. .................Henry.................. Subs: Jennings, Keown, Petit, Rocastle, Overmars ,Merson, Wright
It would have to be: ----------Seaman---------- Dixon--Admans--Bould--Cole ----------Vieira------------ --------------Brady-------- Pires-----Bergkamp----Bastin ----------Henry------------- Bench: Jennings, Campbell, Winterburn, Fabregas, Overmars, Rocky, Wright
- Jennings Rice - Adams - Campbell - Cole Brady - Vieira - Fabregas - Pires - Bergkamp - Henry Subs:O'Leary, Bould, Lauren, Limpar, Wright, Seaman
Rice was a better RB than Dixon and Campbell was a better CB than O'Leary and Bould ! O'Leary just played lots of games he wasn't fantastic. Seaman over Jennings ... really ???
Oops I'm embarrassed to say I completely forgot about Patrick Vierra please log in to view this image Thanks for pointing this out It was one of those threads created at short notice to relief my boredom at international week and to relief my depression over the absence of Messrs Vermaelen and Wilshire.
LOL Friend I had to look him up!!!! Mr Bastin ( God rest his soul ) was way before my time. Indeed of GoonerCym's too if I may add
Wasn't such a great observer in my early days Mr Head so missed out on Pat Rice. I liked David O'Leary and forgot about him but really consider David Seaman our best ever keeper and he also dances
Seaman is considered our best ever goalie ahead of Wilson and Jennings. Seriously though, how can everybody be forgetting about Bastin? 171 goals from the wing in a career cut short at the age of 27 by the war. He's certainly more successful than any other player we'll list here. Five league titles, 2 FA cups.
I can't wait for Cym to find this thread please log in to view this image You just reminded me about David O'Leary, one of my favourites from my days of discovering Highbury. Such a gent as well IMHO
I think it's difficult to put a player in the team who none of us ever saw play, hence Bastin is not in a lot of people's teams. Agree with you about Seaman. Both Jennings and Wilson were great keepers, I'd also put Lukic in that bracket too. But Seaman was a class above and don't forget that he played at a time when the best footballers in the world were all coming to play in the premier league.
Seaman is somewhat tainted for me because of his mistakes .. I don't remember Jennings making howlers of the sort that Seaman unfortunately became famous for.
