A bad case of the Grobelaars might have had an impact on that game.

I am old enough to remember us losing 7 nil to Liverpool and 5 nil to arsenal in 2 months in 1978.
To make it worse, it was when only 2 or 3 match highlights were shown on Motd and another 2 or 3 were on the big match and both these matches were on <doh>
Was 11 or 12...convinced me God was a gooner <laugh>

For me, one CL tie springs to mind.
Against Inter in the CL in 2010.
We we were under Ancelotti, facing Mourinho's Inter.
2 completely abject, passionless and ridiculous performances from us.
Lost 2-1 at the San Siro, having done more or less nothing the whole game, we were lucky to come away only 2-1 down, which gave me hope for the return leg at Stamford Bridge.
Then at the Bridge, we put in the most, dull, flat and uninspiring performance, at least in the Roman era, that i can recall, and lost 0-1.
    Thoroughly depressing.

I mean there have been losses that have probably hit me harder, like the 2008 CL final and 2005 CL Semi against United and Pool Respectively.
But at least in those instances we tried, and only failed through decent play by the opposition, or a refs decision or a ghost goal that never happened.
Against Inter we deserved nothing, and got exactly what we deserved. Only reason neither tie was a tonking was because Jose's Inter didnt play like that.

I remember the 1 nill at Stamford Bridge and after watching it you knew inter were in with a big shout for the cl. You could see they were playing Mourinho’s system at its most effective and they had the players to suit it. Stamford Bridge was a fortress round that time as well and Ancelloti's Chelsea were scoring for fun

Wasn't that the game where they were given a penalty for Gomes on Carrick when he clearly played the ball at Carrick's feet?

The 7-0 was Ardiles and Villa's 3rd game? That wasn't looking such a great investment at the time.

Nope, that was when we lost 5-2 from 2-0 up (Yes @PISKIE, like Arsenal did, twice <grr>)

Doubtful as that game was in September or October 2001. I can remember reading the match report at our friends' house in San Diego.
