In the early days of the playoffs there were 2 automatic relegation/promotion spots. The next team up in division 1 where in the playoffs with 3 division 2 teams. First year that was Charlton. They won and stayed up (i.e not promoted). Second year it was Chelsea. Got to the final but lost and were therefore relegated.
i believe it was riots following chelsea's relegation that brought about the change whereinafter (!) only teams aiming to go up were involved.
in the early days of division 2 (1890s), before promotion and relegation were automatic, they had what were effectively play-offs, though known then as test matches. the teams top of division 2 and bottom of division 1.
They still have a similar system in Scotland where teams in the promotion play-off spots play against teams in the relegation spots of the division above.
Indeed they did although I wasn't considering them with my questions. It started off as straight head-to-head matches. The top team from Div 2 played bottom of Div 1. 2nd played next-to-bottom, and so on. The winner was in Div 1, loser in Div 2. That evolved into a mini-league, with the top two teams from Div 2 and the bottom two from Div 1.
Perhaps its time the clubs were able to charge the ref...Quid-pro-quo and all that.. We'd have a list as long as your arm..Mason, Clattenburg (now gone), Atkinson, Marriner, Oliver, Jones, Madley, Pawson et al.
It's a nice idea, I also like the new system put in at the bottom of the Scottish pyramid that lets junior teams join League 2.
So having just seen half the arsenal team surround the ref to try and get Chan a second yellow.... will they now be charged.......
You can only be charged if the referee sees the infringement, which as Wenger will attest to, is often impossible to see with the Arsenal players. I think the kit must blend in with the background or something.
The FA will be awash with £20k fines after this weekend. Swansea, Burnley, Bournemouth, Arsenal and Man Utd. Oh ......
You couldn't make it up. Really couldn't. Zlatan whatsit gets a 3 game ban and Mings gets 5. Either both get the same or Mings gets less. Are the FA really saying he meant to stamp on ZI's bonce? All the slow motion clips don't show him looking where ZI was, whereas the tw4t clearly looks for Mings. They really are a set of weak lily livered c\/nts, the FA.
The reason Mings got 5 games is because he's Merciless whilst Ibrahimovic gets less cos he's a bit Flash really.
