ASAP I am all for clarity, sadly it won't happen and will be a bone of contention until they do!

I deserve a red card for arguing with the Referee, something I never did when I played, I also should apologise to the player I once flagged against in the mid 1960's too, I wonder if he is still alive and kicking?.

 

I disagree. The rule is as clear as it's possible for a rule to be. You may disagree with what it leads to (feet on the pitch) but I've always known it and never misunderstood it. The fact that it's badly trained into kids is not the FA's fault.

Yes, I am very annoyed that I was misinformed fifty years ago and no one until now has pointed out the error of my ways, I blame those commentators too, leading us astray. I researched many sites, and so many have got it wrong it really is understandable why it has been misinterpreted all this time. I still maintain it would make more sense to stress that no part of the player should be "in play" but that might be awkward if you saw the beer guts on some of the players I was around with!

 

It is risky to be too far forward because of lifting your heels before you release the ball...totally sensible to keep the rule simple when training youngsters.

 

Just looking at the pic on message #664 it is highly likely that players heel would have lifted clear of the white line, and also the linesman isn't looking anyhow so wouldn't have seen it anyway, the player probably had no idea where he was either so couldn't be blamed for deliberately overstepping. Not that it really matters as you can't turn the clock back either and we won anyhow, why on earth did we get so involved is beyond me, but there wasn't much else to talk about anyway. Here's to the next debate, any offers?
