If you followed your local team you would await the draw to see just who you would be playing, and the hope was that you would get a home tie that gave you just a chance of an upset, and helped to swell the club's bank balance a little. A large crowd, 100% effort from the team, and maybe a chance of a replay and a visit to the ground of a top club to see how the other half lived. These were the days before the "big clubs" rather lost interest in turning out on a bumpy pitch, with mud in the goalmouths, and freezing to death as the wind whistled in through the areas where there was no high sided stands to protect the players from the icy blast. The returns for them were marginal compared to what could be gathered in from a few games around Europe, while to a minnow it could almost mean survival. The FA cup has lost some of that magic that once followed it around, with the largest teams often putting out sides that spectators will have never seen, depriving them years later to say that they had seen a star of his day playing against his local side. It sometimes appears that clubs only become interested in the competition if it will take them to the final. Recent Form: Both teams have been going through bad spells recently , with Watford recording only one win and a draw from their last six matches in the EPL, while Burton's record is slightly worse, recording one win and the rest defeats. While Watford have slid down the table, so have Burton who are only one point above the bottom three in the Championship. Team News: With both sides having injured players the best I can say is that I don't have a clue who will be on show. ENJOY THE GAME WHEREVER YOU MIGHT BE!
Watson is back..... that is promising http://www.wdsport.co.uk/2017/01/watson-back-plus-updates-on-success-janmaat-gomes-and-holebas/
Thanks OFH. The BBC says: "Watford manager Walter Mazzarri has seen his squad affected by a fever before their FA Cup third-round match against Championship strugglers Burton. Goalkeeper Heurelho Gomes and left-back Jose Holebas have been struck down by illness and will not play," I hope we can get a win, I hope we can field 11.
Maybe this time, but I genuinely can't remember a time when Lawro put us down for a win - and we do (or did use to ) win occasionally!
Referee: Lee Mason Linesmen: Richard West and Ian Cooper Fourth Official: Tim Robinson Match Day referee Mason has officiated 12 games in 2016/17 with a return of 48 yellow cards and two red cards.
Love a duck, you couldn't make it up! Relatively speaking it's almost biblical! Book of Job... any Hornets with boils???
Well hopefully this will be a break from routine, a comfortable win, and some new opportunities taken. I'm actually looking forward to it. Tx OFH great job although team prediction not up to your incredible offering last time round. Hope the manikin and the supporter drawn from the hat get another chance to shine
we have had so many of these easy to win games over the years but how many have we actually won. Typically a reserve team with a few first teamers has been put out and then the excuse that the players selected were perfectly capable of winning. I am going for an away win. Does Lloyd Dyer still play for burton?
Or Book of Jobson... Don't know about boils, but if we lose this one there will be darkness for three days - and a few firstborns in mortal danger... As it's the Cup, I'm assuming there will be no TV coverage (ie no live streams)?
The last - and, as far as I can see, only - time he refereed at The Vic was a 3rd Round Cup tie on 5th January 2008. Not that I'm a great believer in omens, but we beat Crystal Palace 2-0 that day...
None of the sites I normally use seem to have a stream of the game today, so if anyone knows of one........
