He wasn't even the best midfielder in the last game he played as a midfielder...

There can be only one nomination for this title.

    Simon Walton.

Brilliant player. Up there with the best midfielders we have ever had! His passing was as good as Hudd's, imo.

Its easy to look back with great fondness, but over the last decade we are playing at a higher level then ever before so realistically, they have to be during this period. Rules out the usual favourites (and certainly mine) Askew/ Parker/ Simpkin/ Houghton etc who never even played top flight for us.
I thought it was a privilege to watch JJ, but they were only cameos at the end of his career, and never in premier league.. Ash is a legend for all he achieved, but that wasnt the question, he had one solid season in premier, Barmby/ Snodgrass and co are n't genuine midfielders. Bullard had one good November. I cant actually think of anyone who had a sustained period where they were they were automatic choices . So actually, there isn't a lot left. Obviously Tom, but he's been constantly in and out of the team. Apart from his difficult year, Jake was always minimum 7 and often ran the game.

Totally agree. It can only reallistically be a player that left us in the lower leagues to feature in the top division or a player that has played for us in the PL.

    Somewhat narrows the list.

How many years can you look back on with great fondness? I personally saw Ken Houghton -- and his illustrious teammates -- many, many times both at fer ark and at many grounds around England. They did pretty well against higher-league opposition, time and time again. Being a brilliant passer of the ball is (pretty much) independent of the league the player plays in. (Obviously, time to play the ball also has a significant effect on the quality of a pass.)

You really believe you're a spokesman for the whole board? With such a limited vocabulary? You gormless sod! You still haven't realized you're a laughing stock? Haven't you got anything even slightly relevant or interesting to say? Swear on, fatty. And don't call me God; it's so dated.

    Not the best midfielder, no.

Definitely our most consistent player overall this season though. Snodgrass has been our best player but Jake's been more consistent. He'll be a big loss to us if Mason doesn't step in and be the player we payed £13 million for. Huddlestone's got the talent and ability but not the consistency.

Snodgrass. Maybe he hasn't been at the club long enough to warrant best ever ! But on his performances so far I'd put him top of the pile ....then Koren

I really like Jake as a character and a competitor, but feel he has been a bit mixed as a performer here. I actually thought that from about half way through his first season through to when we got relegated, the combo of him and Tom in midfield wasn't working, and Steve Bruce just stuck with it. I actually think he has been a far more effective performer since he came back from his spell out of the game, so sorry to see him go now

Boateng was a decent workhorse at times but absolute rubbish at other times.
