There's often a temptation to think that players in other teams are better than the ones we already have. Why do we assume that players playing in our lower leagues would do better than the ones we have that already play in the PL? The reason Alli is lauded as exceptional is because he is exceptional and an unusual case. You can't really tell how good a player is until they start playing in the PL.

I reckon it's more hope than assumption. Whether lower league, same league or foreign league, if a player looks good and somewhat of a "right fit" then you're going to think/ hope they'll do a good job for your side, the bonus of being a lower league player is generally they can be got for a smaller fee. There's been a bunch of good buys from the lower leagues, just by us alone - Robinson, Dawson, Lennon, Bale, Huddlestone, Rose, Walker and now Alli.

I think the days of low fees in the championship has gone, unless you mean sub 20 million is low!.

Alli was an exception but he was also in league 1 at the time, 2 divisions below, and you had to loan him back and he only had 2 years left on his contract.

You just have to look at some of the ridiculous fees in the championship of the last few years (half of them failed pl strikers)

    Gayle - 10m
    Mccormack - 2 x 12m+ transfers
    Kodjia - 11m
    Vydra - 8m
    Andre Gray - 10m
    Rhodes - 10m

Then again, whats 10m in the premierleague nowadays. It's 1 james tomkins

Where Spurs are, there is a fine line between material success and failure.
Didn't take much for two managers to eff-up the CL slot in 2012 and 2013.
Similarly for getting into slumps that the manager does not appear to know
    how to deal with (2008, 2013) .

Questions are rightly being asked of Pochettino now.
If he fronts up with a "the things that don't kill you only make you stronger"
attitude, then all will be well. But if not : see above ...

Yeah I think your last sentence sort of sums it up, £10m is now the £3m/£4m of a few years back so essentially it's still relatively 'cheap' in PL club's terms.

There's still possible bargains like an Alli lying about somewhere though I reckon, just have to get the right people about looking for them.

Chelsea have been accused of attempting to tap-up our former youth team midfielder Nya Kirby, who joined Palace as a free agent in the summer.

Not the worst thing that Chelsea have been accused of doing to youth players this week, but still...

I count 38. Here's the list (sorry for linking to the dark side)
    http://www.chelseafc.com/teams/on-loan-players.html

As for who pays, then it is a negotiation between the clubs. I suspect Vitesse Arnheim (sp?) only pay a proportion of the costs as they are essentially a Chelsea satellite now. Any club that pays full whack will be stupid, Chelsea must be desperate to get some of these players regular matches. They'll need multi-storey dressing rooms if they are all at the club.

The authorities should regulate this. The stockpiling of players breaches anti competition laws surely?

My club is probably no better - and most other leading PL clubs (including Spurs) do it to a greater or lesser extent too. But it ultimately stifles the development of young players here in England. We see so many promising young players, who are never going to be quite good enough for the top clubs, loaned out to a dozen different clubs over 5-6 years, only to finish up in League One in their mid 20s. If they were allowed to develop at one club where there was a natural progression to first team football, the chances are that they would be better players by their early 20s and more likely to progress up the ladder - with greater financial benefit for the club which had nurtured them and a better chance of a successful career for the players concerned.

Chelsea's system doesn't guarantee results for players, by any means, but a lot of them appear to have some success.
They get top training, then loans out to willing clubs and then generally get sold on.
Not many of them, if any, break through at Stamford Bridge, but they move on to a lot of decent clubs.

The league isn't doing anything about this, so it's something that we should look to emulate.
We'd have a lot more space for these kids to make an impact, in my opinion.

City are following the exact same model - and just like the Chavs, they too have a double figured number of players out on loan across Europe, with the Eredivisie doing quite well out of them as one player each at PSV, Heerenven, and Go Ahead Eagles, while Twente have three and NAC Breda have four.

The PL seems to have become a "breeding ground" for foreign players at the expense of British players, unless they are exceptional!

No we don't. Spurs have a decent "use them or lose them" strategy.
Of the Academy pipeline since 2012, Walker/Rose/Kane (and Carroll/Winks to a
lesser degree) are playing for the seniors.
And Naughton/Livermore/Mason/Townsend are playing regularly at PL clubs.
