not directly no... he's been very lucky when he's completely missed the ball. I blame klopp for the times we get under pressure knocking it about at the back.. its how he wants to play and i support it.

I agree with your assessment on less chances.

Goals like lucas passing it for an open goal.. or lovern dollying it up for a handy tap in... these are madness but the goals for set piece are often guys getting isolated by taller players (or clyne forgetting to mark) so the madness can be reduced, but the set piece ones look to be on for any good delivery into our 6 yard area.

I think having can in will help. string can, matip and lovern along the 6 yard line... that can work but the second ball really must be cleared well... thats where the goals are coming from.

'Matip is a firm favourite - big, strong and doesn't get ruffled'

By registering his first goal for the club with an unstoppable header at Crystal Palace, Joel Matip demonstrated exactly why he can be a vital figure at both ends of the field, according to David Fairclough.

In the closing moments of an eventful first half at Selhurst Park on Saturday, the centre-back expertly nodded in Philippe Coutinho’s corner to put the Reds 3-2 up.

The fine finish came as part of another assured display at the back from the No.32 and his popularity continues to grow with supporters.

Former Liverpool forward Fairclough is also a big fan of his qualities, believing Matip to be an inspired signing by Jürgen Klopp.

“I think Matip has really come on and he has gradually become a firm favourite amongst the Liverpool supporters,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.

“It was great to see him get his first goal for the club and it was an unstoppable header. You get the impression with his presence he is capable of getting more goals for us like that.

“Everybody who watches Liverpool can’t help but notice how calm Matip is. He is a big, imposing figure who has added height and strength to the side.

“He handles himself extremely well and he doesn’t get ruffled. He is getting stronger and stronger.”
Saturday’s win at Palace saw Klopp’s charges extend their unbeaten Premier League run to eight games to remain level on points with Manchester City and Arsenal at the summit.

Once again, Brazilian duo Coutinho and Roberto Firmino were the chief tormentors as the Eagles backline struggled to cope with the Reds’ dynamic attack, and Fairclough feels another statement of intent was issued.

He said: “We all expected an exciting game but for some people there was a touch of trepidation about going to Crystal Palace, but with the form Liverpool have been in during recent weeks I always felt we would get a performance.

“The football Liverpool played in the first half was sensational and Philippe Coutinho was fantastic.

“He started well and maintained that. He’s a great player and we are seeing the best of Coutinho this season with his goals and the assists he makes.

“Firmino scored another superb goal and once you get a little taste of scoring, it’s something you want to continue, so you sense we are in for a really good season with the likes of Firmino, Coutinho and Sadio Mane all contributing.

“Don’t forget, Adam Lallana has scored a few goals this season as well, so with the forward players we have available, including Daniel Sturridge and Divock Origi, it’s a very exciting prospect.”

Next up for Liverpool is the vist of Watford to Anfield on Sunday in the final game before the international break.

Walter Mazzarri’s side are seventh in the Premier League table and have kept three successive clean sheets in the top flight, but Fairclough believes the Hornets won’t be relishing a visit to L4.

He added: “They are one of the few teams to play three at the back, which presents a different proposition, but it shouldn’t be that great a problem for us if we play our game.

“Liverpool have faced awkward situations this season as most teams have tried to play defensively at Anfield, so we are used to crowded situations on the field.

“Watford are a big and strong team and obviously they have the threat of Troy Deeney and Odion Ighalo up front, but Anfield is a very difficult place to visit these dahttp://www.liverpoolfc.com/news/first-team/241453-matip-is-a-firm-favourite-big-strong-and-doesn-t-get-ruffledys and it is going to be a tough game for Watford.”

There are no perfect football teams and there will always be weaknesses to exploit, no matter how good a team you are. Klopp is a perfectionist, though, and right now set-pieces are a small speck of dust on what is a very, very good Liverpool side. If the media want to continue trotting out the line about our supposedly ‘dodgy defence’, that’s fine. Go for it. But it’s simply not true.

Since December 7 2013 we, have been looking at our defence, unfortunately there is no marked improvement.
Bournemouth come back much better than Istanbul. We are not taking anything away from Bournemouth. Well done.:emoticon-0150-hands<applause>.

I think it has improved to be fair. But it still crumbles when it's Under pressure. Need more leaders

    its a whole team affiar

    Look at goals conceded

    1. did klopp instruct them to change.. no. he mreely said why didn't you kick it out to one of them.

    2. did klopp or anyone react to henderson booking. no. Can and wijnaldum continued to pile on at 3-1 and not get back most importantly. exposed the team totally.

    3. Did origi and lallana and firmino press hard and close down second half.. no not really

    4. Did karius do his job. no.

    5. did milner.. no not really

    6. was clyne eer seen blocking anyhting or putting in a challenge no.

    6. was milner given much help at LB.. no not really

This is an entire team failure IMO. not just the defense. Yes miss one challenge back there and its a goal but we got walked through from front to back in final 14mins. and really we needed klopp to make a change in formation, personnel or just swap players round and he did none of those things imo.

Objectively I don't think we have improved our defence.

    1. GK: I doubt any of us can argue the case that Karius currently is a significant improvement on Mignolet so =
    2. Full backs: Milner Clyne and Moreno whereas in the past we had the likes of Flanagan and Johnson so - minus
3: Centrebacks: Lovren, Skrtel, Toure v/s Matip, Lovren. So = + plus

    Overall: =

Our current fullbacks piss all over flannel and Johnson.

But as MITO said, defending as a team is far better now because we have a structure.

Individually, the defnecenstill needs work but it's better protected.

Klavan looks to be a shrewd signing. He's been brilliant since coming in for Matip.

Players are small cogs. It's all about the medium cogs (partnerships on the pitch), they help form a quality large cog (team)

We are defending very well as a team - still think our back line is suspect but it's much better protected now.

Really nullified city yesterday (they weren't at their best but they still have quality players who can produce moments of magic).

We defended very well against Everton and Manchester city, but poorly against bottom of the league Sunderland. Time for Matip to be back, not a disaster yet !

as in the midfield went awol and let sundelrand have free runs at back 4 to flop over for pens and frees that never were?

yeah I cna see that. Can was a disaster at CM but lucas came on and was still not shielding the back 4.
