Criminal if we let him go for those prices. Think you're both right, but if the club had any ambition then they'd keep him, even if he buggers off on a free. We will struggle to find a decent replacement for the amount we sell him for.
We'll probably end up signing a half decent replacement but still won't have enough to form a squad. 2014-15 squad was too small until we brought in Watt, Diarra and Eagles. We didn't build a squad. 2015-16 We failed to keep hold of Bulot. Texeira was a decent addition but it was too little too late. We didn't build a squad. 2016-17 We replaced Gudmundsson with Holmes, squad was too small until Jan and still wasn't good enough then. We didn't build a squad. It's not even like Duchatelet is tight in this league, Pearce cost over a mil and Ajose was an expensive (crap) signing. The unwillingness to fully build a squad after a few promising signings has cost us year after year and will continue to do so. How was Ajose supposed to succeed when the creativity behind him was Foley, Jackson and Crofts?
Agreed mate. Ajose got 11 goals the season just gone and proved that he can score for us. Just this ****ty squad depth and lacking quality service. With Jackson gone and anyone decent in our midfield basically out, we need an overhaul. If we had players like Dale Stephens, Danny Hollands, Scott Waggstaff / Danny Green on the wings putting in decent balls, he'll get a load of goals.
Noises coming out of the club seem to suggest we will be on more of a budget this year - the lack of revenue will have an affect, in particular the terrible tv money in comparison to Championship football. If we have anywhere near the reported 2mil we spent last season, then it needs to go on quantity as well as quality which is tough. Selling players on top of that is just suicide. We don't have the numbers to sell our best players.
if holmes gets offered a new deal the lure of a guaranteed few years where he has settled, on more money, could keep him with us. at 30, he's probably looking to cash in, whilst knowing he's not going to have to move every year. other than him, i'm not fussed about any of the other players, aside from the home grown players. our team is sh1t. it will never get any better than the previous year under this regime - they're clueless ars3holes.
I reckon Reeves will be next year's Holmes, there will be a buzz and then nothing for a few months until we sign a free agent left back on deadline day.
It's your lucky day! http://www.somersetlive.co.uk/sport/football/charlton-athletic-oxford-united-join-51315
To be fair, I can see Konsa, Bauer and Tex all going. That would leave us with Pearce and an unconvincing and injury/red card prone Lennon.
I've got a feeling this debate could re-open in a month or two if Sheffield Utd. come back. Holmes will get fed up with being our only positive player, especially if the chances of promotion look dim by January.
A very real danger. Never mind KR's whimsical promises of money spent on a striker. If things are not going well by Christmas Ricky Holmes will almost certainly be feeling disillusioned and let down. His yellow cards so far this season indicate that he is giving full commitment again, not that fans who have seen him play will need to be told that. If the rest of the team fails to deliver, Holmes could hardly be blamed for thinking enough is enough in January.
Another factor is Konsa's lack of game time. If he's not playing Roland won't get much of a payoff for a player who can't get into a L1 side, and Holmes is the only other player who would command a decent transfer fee, and if we're going to get another striker in, even a loanee, we'll need to sell someone.
