Anyone else a bit sick of Rooney being continually compared in goal scoring terms to Bobby Charlton? Yes, Rooney broke his record, but let's keep things in perspective, Charlton played as a midfielder for the vast majority of his career. Let's make a more accurate comparison for the "great" Wayne Rooney. Premier League Appearances 449, Premier League Goals 194. Alan Shearer, who was essentially a better version (erroneous comparisons with Rooney and Gazza should **** off), Premier League Appearances 441, Premier League Goals 260. Rooney has played in a title winning team much longer, hasn't scored as many goals and is washed up at 31. I'd rather have Luque back Thoughts?
He has looked poor for about 4 seasons now, bar the odd flash of brilliance. Anyway, we should be comparing him to Shrek.
Cannot even get that right these days. Had the potential at 16/17 and ruined it by going to Man Utd. Made a fortune from the game yet has been significantly limited in ability for years. Woop de Doo, he's broken Bobby Charlton's record - Not even half the player that that great man was.
Personally I think he deserves a lot of credit and has had an incredible career. The problem for him is he is compared to the greats of the game and he probably falls a little below quite a few. Still an incredible achievement and top player. His issue is he has been in decline for an awful long time and no one has helped him. He needed to change his game and move back quite a while ago. Xavi was saying 2-3 years ago. Its not like Shearer where he is smart enough to make that call on his own. I can't help but feel SAF would have done this. Or discarded him
He's played more games but to be fair keeping your place that long at a club like Man United commands respect. I think he's class on his day but for me he's been inconsistent his whole career
Says Rooney can't be compared with Charlton because they played different positions, then goes on to compare Rooney to Shearer Let's compare Bergkamp and Henry. please log in to view this image
A fair comparison with Rooney (266 in 620) for me would Sheringham (355 in 898), Beardsley (237 in 755), Zola (216 in 715), Bergkamp (272 in 741). I think he does fairly well in the goals department but has maybe played as a central striker more and not created as many goals as those guys. Sheringham is probably the closest you get really. Note all those career totals are sketchy as taken from wiki Personally I think those are the types of player I would compare him to. To be honest I found it difficult to find the right players. He is more centre forward than a lot of those types. Yet you wouldn't compare him with a Shearer or Van Nistelrooy. Henry is then different again. He just highlights how comparing players from different eras or even the same era is fraught with the ability to cause debate. Every player has their own subtle differences. Its why I'm not a stats man. People obsess over stats but I still think the eye tells you more.
