His highlight was captaining the All Whites to their historic first World Cup finals, in Spain in 1982. But the influence of the former Blackpool player spread wider than that after he arrived in New Zealand in 1973 and joined Christchurch United, helping them to the national league title in his debut season. Sumner, an attacking midfielder, played 105 games for the All Whites over 12 years, scoring 27 goals. He was the first Oceania player to score a World Cup finals goal, netting in the 5-2 loss to Scotland. Ad Feedback He helped Christchurch United win a record six Chatham Cups and five league titles. he also played for Manurewa and Gisborne City as well as West Adelaide and Newcastle in the Australian league. Sumner was made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit last year for services to football. But in terms of pure football, nothing could match the 15-game 1982 World Cup qualification campaign, that took the All Whites to nine countries, and had rugby-mad New Zealand suddenly fascinated with the round ball code. He was desperate to see it prosper. Over the last 18 months he was also desperate to see his personal health struggles provide an example to others, urging men to have regular prostate checks.

The cause of his death was not immediately clear. He was in a hospital being treated for exhaustion. Earlier this month, he retired from touring after more than 50 years. A rare artist to have won a Grammy in jazz, pop and R&B categories, Jarreau was famed for writing the theme to hit television show Moonlighting. He was acclaimed for his versatility and after receiving awards as a jazz singer, he crossed over into pop. Oxford hockey goalkeeper tragically dies after collapsing during match with BA Hockey at QPR's training ground Tim Bence suffered a heart attack during game against British Airways Hockey Club at QPR's Harlington training ground and, sadly, passed away please log in to view this image BA Hockey Club joined the rest of the sport in mourning following the tragic passing of Oxford opponent Tim Bence during Saturday’s game. The visiting goalkeeper collapsed on the pitch in the match staged at QPR’s training ground and despite immediate action by his team mates and prompt medical assistance from doctor’s, including staff connected to the Championship football club, Bence died later in the afternoon. The game was immediately abandoned. Oxford Chairman Richard Oakes paid warm tribute to the club stalwart in the wake of the tragedy. “It is with a great deal of sadness that I am letting you know that during the men’s 7s game on Saturday Tim Bence, our friend and goalkeeper, collapsed,” he told players and supporters on the club’s website. “He received prompt medical care, but regrettably, despite all the doctor’s efforts, he passed away yesterday afternoon.” Tim has been a keen and enthusiastic member of the club for many years playing in goal for both the men’s and mixed sections and he readily endeared himself to both team members and opponents alike. He will be sorely missed by the club and our thoughts are with his family and friends at this difficult time. Host BA were quick to join others on social media sending tributes to Bence. “British Airways Hockey Club offer their deepest condolences to the family and friends of Tim Bence who passed away while playing for Oxford Hockey Club against BA on Saturday,” read a club statement. “It is events like this which prove winning or losing is actually secondary to just enjoying the game and having a beer or two afterwards. BA stand with Oxford Hockey Club during this time of great sadness and are ready to offer whatever support they can. “BA would like to thank the Imperial Harlington Grounds Team and the QPR medical team for their swift action in trying to help Tim.” According to QPR’s own club doctor 12 people under 35 die every week in the UK from sudden cardiac arrest. Rs CEO Lee Hoos added his and QPR’s voice to those sending condolences. “Firstly, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to Tim’s family and friends following this tragic accident,” he said “The medical team from QPR who were on the ground at the time of the incident responded in the most professional of manners and we praise them for their actions. “We will be making contact with the family in the coming days and on behalf of everyone at the club, we once again send our sincere condolences. “At a time convenient to them, it would be our privilege to host the family at our game.”
Tommy Gemmell, who scored for Celtic in their 1967 European Cup win, has passed away aged 73. The win against Inter Milan was the first European Cup final I saw live on TV and they made history as the first British winners. All done with a team all born within 30 miles of Glasgow, an amazing feat that will never be repeated...
Former Formula 1 and motorcycling world champion John Surtees has died at the age of 83, his family has announced. Surtees is the only man to have won the grand prix world championship on both two wheels and four. He was being treated for an existing respiratory condition, a family statement said. "We deeply mourn the loss of such an incredible, kind and loving man as well as celebrate his amazing life," it added. Definate hero of mine. RIP
Surtees' double will never be repeated, all the more amazing considering the lack of safety features and technology in that era. A true hero, RIP...
