The truth is, is that although it is a huge sum and is only a 5th or 6th less than the Premier League winners. The real money comes from merchandising. But you only start to get that if you start to win things. Being the plucky runners-up just doesn't cut it with most people worldwide who want to shell out for a shirt and scarf, and laud their heroes. Who, incidentally, get sold on after 2-3 seasons. Still, it's better than West Ham got. Although they got a free stadium too, which they aren't grateful for.
Merchandising and sponsorship. Remember the season united got 75m for 10 year shirt manufacturers contract and we got 1.5m for the shirt sponsor?
Tbh, I tend to include sponsorship in with merchandising, because to the consumer, they pay the extra for the merchandising that gets sold to cover it. But you're right, it is separate on the balance sheet of a football club. And major sponsorships are not to be sniffed at. Funnily enough, £75M over 10 years seems rather mundane these days.
OK. I was just repeating FLT's words there. I didn't check for myself. £75M per year for 10 years seems more like today's numbers. But that just reaffirms the whole point that the real money is made, not in titles, or coming 2nd, 3rd, or 8th in a league. The real money is made on the back of winning titles and trophies, and being near the top of the most watched league in the world. Whereas before, it was directly the gate receipts and title/trophy winning that brought in the money, those things are now part of the structure and reputation. So they are actually the catalyst to a club becoming enormous, but it's the merchandising and sponsorship [see FLT, I made them separate] that rakes in the major cash.
There's plenty of scope for us to improve sponsorship and merchandising deals, but it will be a massive and hard slog. We are just not a 'famous name'. Teams that have been lower than us for years are historically bigger names. That is why we are being promoted by Kreuger et al as a team associated with training and an Academy....we have to find a different peg to hang our hat on....we have no trophy winning history to promote.
Which is why I mentioned it in the first place. The gulf between us and them financially is massive, yet I still read comments comparing how much 8th place wins not being that far behind 1st-5th.
That will be interesting. He's one of a few candidates apparently, but if he gets it I hope he isn't too good with us allegedly having been close to him last summer.

https://www.thisisanfield.com/2017/06/dejan-lovren-southampton-liverpool-tale-two-cities/ Unfavourable comparison of Lovren at Saints to his performance at Liverpool. The mystery is why he got a new contract....was it because they didn't land VVD?
Pleased he got a new deal. He is going to put them through the mill this coming season. The Champions league will be hilarious.
Lovren stormed off in an interview when he was asked about Virgil....so glad that he had too much respect for Saints to talk about one of their players without permission.
