Maybe it could be made as simple to change nationality. The English father of one of my neighbours has applied for an Irish passport having set up a business in the south 30 years ago. His daughter, my neighbour has applied for a French one as she has lived here for ten years now, and her brother who has worked in Holland for 6 years has applied for a Dutch one. I might have to follow a similar route before long.
Buying a second hand car in France is a different experience than buying one in England. Here the dealers will have a large mark up, and are quite happy to see the stock sitting on the forecourt until they get the price close to the one shown on the windscreen. I have managed over the years to do some good deals, so my daughter who has an aged and not so reliable car, and had finally found something she wanted, called upon me to go and see what price could be agreed. A small one man garage, but everything about it looked good. The owner himself seemed honest, and had presented the car well with new tyres and brakes, a brand new MOT, and a full service history. My daughter had never driven a LHD car before, let alone one without a handbrake, but the owner was willing to let her have a test drive. Having returned in one piece, she said she would like it, and then I was called into action. Offer him a €1000 less, but be prepared to pay €500 less than the asking price. There was a great sucking of teeth with the original offer, and he asked for an additional €300, which she jumped at. So €700 saved, and he agreed to do all the registering with Poitiers, €80, and fill the tank with fuel, €60. Everyone was happy, and I felt that my daughter had a decent car at a fair price, and the very decent garage owner had not been robbed. A good result all round.
Just been to see the film Dunkirk..... lots of AV effects.. . but not at all overblown and stark in the numbers that died......
Good morning all from a warm and dry Weston-super-Mare - it's supposed to rain pretty much all day today???? Have a good day!
Morning all from an overcast part of the country. The big question is will it, or won't it? The meteo forecast showers or light rain for this afternoon, but they keep saying it and none appears. The fires in the south east and Corsica are creating huge problems as this is the holiday season and people descend on the area en masse. Much of the undergrowth here is tinder dry, and it would take very little to accidentally start a fire that would soon be out of control.
It is time that governments got together to make sure there is a fair distribution of rain. Typical of the UK to think they can hog it all.
Afternoon from a wet St. Helier. I've been signed off for the rest of the week with acute stress - it makes a nice change from each morning thinking that I want to stay at home. I definitely think that part of the problem is the outsourcing to Poland. I'm the only member of my team at my level, everyone else are managers or above. It seems like that I have to do all the work for the clients in our team that have said no to Poland doing the bookkeeping. It probably isn't the case, but that is how I perceive it.
