I thought I'd get some footy talk going seeing as the season is upon us.

I'm going to pick a fringe player and I want us to discuss how he fits into the squad this season? Will he improve, will be be sold, will be remain a squad player?

This isn't too lay into a player but to discuss his pros and cons so think before posting.

He's been criticised by a lot of fans, most don't think he's good enough.
He's not the tallest either so doesn't help with our defending of set pieces.
However it was his first season and many players struggle to adapt to the pace, could this be a more consistent season for him?
He has a lot of experience and seems calm on the ball and he can pass it.

I don't think he's going to be first choice but he may be good cover for injuries.
I don't think there will be a huge improvment but he will be better and provide good squad cover this season.

He's decent cover. Klavan started getting stick from some on here when we had our dip in mid season....unfairly imo

    well done that man.

    footy talk is always good.

IMo this depends on one thing and one thing only. virgil the VD (as saints fans now call him)

If we buy the guy then Klavan is at best 4th choice. He is 32 in october. theres no improvement in him. He won't be sold, he's on tiny wages.

I can see him playing with the kids in league cup, partnering joe gomez... IF we get VVD then Lovren covers matip when his ankle goes (and it prob will)

IF we fail to buy a CB I can see us relying o nthis guy for 10 games in league due to matip's dodgy ankle and that worries me. his communication skills ar epoor and his spatial awareness sucks eggs.

If we get VVD (don't want to get into this too much) then Lovren would be the cover and I'd then like Gomez to be next in line so that he develops, it'll do us no good putting Gomez behind Klavan in that situation.

TBH klavan is very much a LCB so I could only conclude form last year that klopp I think played lucas there once rather than klavan so....

In terms of order Lovren is currently clear no 1 LCB and second RCB behind matip. Gomez IMo is no 3 RCB.

At LCB its lovren, klavan then ???

the issue for me is that I cannot see klopp play say Gomez, Lovren as a CB partnership also don't think gomez has done enough to get that trust.

With or without VVD I do not know what our regular CB would look like.Ragnar Klavan certainly out of the equation.

I'd sooner have Klavan as VVD back up than Lovren.

    well....

    thats be bias then.

Lovren is great right up til he ****s it all up in none moment. Like last friendly.. brilliant right up until he ****s it. Klavan isn't tall enough, good enough on the ball or spatially aware enough.

He's too old [laughs to self as he's almost half my age] to develop into something he isn't at present, so for me he will be good cover. Do people say Klay-van or Kla-van? I know commentators say the second one but I say Klayvan.

I've watched a few episodes of the new version, it's nowhere near the quality of the original Vikings movie.<grr>
