Stayed in last night, usual for NYE, can't be doing with the once a year pub dwellers & queues at the bar. Not been out for years. She's had the tree & other ****e away this afty. A meal at my daughters tonight, Mrs said she'll drive, good girl!! Last day off tomorrow, toying with a drive to West Bromwich & then, as quick as it came, Christmas will have done one for another year. Great thread chaps.
Same here with New Year. My local is fairly quiet normally but rammed at Xmas and New Year. People who don't speak all year or some twat you have never met before slapping you on the back and wishing you all the best. It should be banned along with St Guinness Day.
Lad's just got back from Manchester said it was a good night but stupidly expensive. Barman told him they'd put the prices up because it was the weekend & again because it was NYE. £6 for a bottle of Corona. £9+ for a double vodka & coke. I'd have come home. Albert Schloss, a beer & cocktail bar, wanted £100 to get in. You got a bottle of Champagne though.
As long as people let them get away with it they will do it. Do other countries hike the prices of drinks on NYE?
Supposed to be going out last night to the local then back home to see the new year in with the kids. I started feeling crap, no booze to blame, and fell asleep on the couch. Woke up at 12 and went to bed thinking i would be first in the rip thread for january... Feel fine now. Weird
Well, they don't round here.Or anywhere else I've been. Maybe they only do it where it is more cool and sophisticated. The whole pub thing here is depressing. Much prefer bars in Belgium, Germany, Holland. That is the local ones not the Irish and Cockney abominations that visiting Brits go in and pay more for worse beer and even worse service than the local ones.
I think it depends where and when you go Castro. I enjoy and Saturday afternoon/early evening around the Old Town area. If it was the night time I hate it.
When I do go out, with my wife or with a mate it is in an afternoon and this has been the situation for quite some time. Another change over time is going for a meal, even if it is only pub grub, I find it preferable to being stood at the bar for hours on end. Those days have gone and I'm not sorry to see them go.
Yeah still enjoy the old town pubs with proper ale and oldie type atmosphere. And even then agree couldn't stand at the bar all night. Is that old age or shifting cultures?
You can't beat an afternoon drink in the old town! Either with the wife or a few friends, Up to about 7/8 pm and it's usually full of likeminded people! Town late on is crap Imo.
If any of you are in Manchester, I'd certainly recommend Albert Schloss as a venue with great beers, food , entertainment and service. I took my family there a few days ago and was quite impressed. Booking is a must, they were people queuing outside all the time I was there.
As the festive season has worn on my Rennies to Pints ratio has steadily increased It's about 1:1 at the moment ! Don't worry I'll keep plugging away
Lunch of champions today. Cheese (various) and crackers, with silverskin pickled onions. Followed by Stollen. The fridge is still half full of cheese. Awesome!
