The hot summer of '76. What a fantastic squad, only 15 players! Maybe our younger supporters don't realise that there was only one sub at that time. If I remember correctly sat on the bench normally wearing the number 12 shirt would of been Donnie Gillies, sometimes Mickey Brolly (who I can't remember him playing in the old 1st division) and making up the squad David Rodgers and John Shaw. Those really were the days. I was 15...and we were coming back from holiday at Sandy Bay (now Devon Cliffs) on the day we won 1-0 at Highbury. It was a very happy journey home dreaming we were top of the 1st Division which we were on points, but not on goal difference. A true team of legends that always gave their all for the club.
Just left school and started working on the Gloucester Road-Great days remember them well. Moved to Devon late 80's, we live about a mile from Sandy Bay
Very nice. Do you ever go to the Clinton Arms in Littleham Village - if it's still there of course ? Sandy Bay was a very popular destination when I was a kid/teenager. I'm not sure what it's like now or whether I'd want to try it again, but when I got married we used to take our kids there when they were little too. We also used to go to The Cranford pub in Littleham when we were down there. It used to have a Totem Pole or something similar outside. It's now long gone and was replaced with what looks like flats the last time I was down there.
Yes the Clinton Arms is still there and do use it occasionally. Sandy Bay is still owned by Devon Cliffs/Haven and is a large concern today. Probably hasn't changed too much over time other than the entertainment parks are bigger and newer. The Cranford pub burned down prior to me arriving here though I knew it from a holiday similar to yours. Usually venture into town for a beer when we go out as plenty of choice.
Thanks for the info ! We also used to frequent an Indian Restaurant in Exmouth called the Bilash Tandoori (I think) which was up a side street behind the main square on the left going up from the main street, but that had been renamed last time I was down Exmouth way.
Super days, I was a mere 16 year old, scarf around wrists with DR Martins, looked the bollocks!! Very close to getting my head kicked in at Highbury....... Was a good job both teams displayed Red & White!! Great team, would be really good to bring those times back again!!
What a team ! Still my favourite ever I can't see it happening again in BS3 - Dicks' side were a freak of nature
I used to take mine down and now take my grandchildren. I go down at short notice these days (pre school holidays) when there's a good weather forecast. I took my young children all over Europe, skiing as well, but when asked 1 summer where they wanted to go that year it was : 'Can we fly ..........,. To Sandy Bay'.
The name has changed, but there is an Indian that's been there for years called The Ganges. Wife hates curry so rarely go.All the pubs down that street are completely modernised. Quite a shame really
KEN Wimshirst . now there is player that got on with his job quietly and effiently .. is that Bardsley?
And Gordon Parr, Dickie Rooks, Bobby Kellard, Jantzen Derrick, Alan Skirton, Mike Gibson. They all just got on with their jobs.
wouldn't agree with JD he was OK WITH SPACE AND GOING FORWARD BUT TACKLING .... no his biggest let down ... had he been a bit more aggressive, even just a little bit he would have been very good... just average in my book
tbh JG, I would say that about this team generally. They were a decent 2nd division side, no more. The best players were Sharpe and Galley if memory serves. Skirton was half decent, and Mike Gibson would have played for his country if he had been a bit bigger. No, the big improvement came with the next generation of players, and began with the arrival of Gow, Tainton and Sweeney
