If I remember correctly McCarthy got you promoted so earned his right to manage you in the Premiership and expectations will have been lower (if that is possible!). He had also shown he was capable of getting the team winning (in the previous season) and there was a general feeling the players just weren't good enough.

As for managers, you missed to opportunity to get Rowett when he was available and now I'd put all the effort on Wagner (if Moyes goes and Huddersfield do not go up).
