Sunderland manager David Moyes gets a big fat 0 in Middlesbrough loss

Sunderland manager David Moyes believes there is nobody who wants to win more than him.
Sunderland slid towards the Championship as they slumped to a dismal defeat at relegation rivals Middlesbrough on Wednesday night. Once again they turned in a performance that was well below the standards required of a Premier League team.

For beleaguered manager David Moyes, it was yet another bad day at the office. This match, against a Middlesbrough team who had not won a game in 2017, was probably his last chance to avoid having an embarrassing relegation on his rapidly diminishing CV.

That his team failed to take it with a lack-lustre performance will add to his detractors. Any Sunderland supporter who stood up for Moyes would have found it hard to raise any encouragement from the performance that his team turned in as Marten de Roon's goal sealed things.

Weak in defence, feeble in midfield and totally ineffective in attack, this Sunderland team is as bad as any that has worn the red and white stripes in the club's long and illustrious history.

Positives

There are only five more games left before the season ends.

Negatives

Too many players seemed as if they wanted to be wearing anything other than a Sunderland shirt.

Manager rating out of 10

0 -- Same tired old tactics, same poor use of substitutes, same dismal result.

GK Jordan Pickford, 6 -- Might have done better with the goal but was otherwise up to his usual standard.

DF Billy Jones, 3 -- Once again, completely out of his depth. Appalling marking on De Roon for the Middlesbrough goal.

DF Jason Denayer, 6 -- Struggled at the start but settled well. Won some good headers and saw off Negredo.

DF John O'Shea, 4 -- Struggled with the pace of De Roon and showed little of the composure that he is associated with.

DF Javier Manquillo, 5 -- Tried to push forward but looks as if he cannot wait to get back to Spain.

MF Didier Ndong, 7 -- Played well and was busy all over the pitch. Has his limitations but they don't show up in such a poor side.

MF Darron Gibson, 2 -- A dreadful performance from an experienced player. Gave the ball away and avoided tackles until he was replaced.

MF Lee Cattermole, 4 -- Not a great return to his old stamping ground. Worked hard with no end result.

FW Wahbi Khazri, 5 -- Looked for the ball but wasted it far too often.

FW Jermain Defoe, 5 -- The goals have dried up mainly due to the abysmal service he receives from the midfield.

FW Victor Anichebe, 5 -- Wasted out wide on the left. He should be in the middle with Defoe and where his strength can be fully utilised. But the manager sees it differently.

Substitutes

Fabio Borini, 2 -- As ineffective as the man he replaced

Adnan Januzaj, NR -- No worthwhile contribution. Wasted a free kick from a good position.

Jack Rodwell, NR -- As peripheral as ever.

loss to Middlesbrough more or less ended any faint hopes Sunderland had of staying up as David Moyes’ side now face the prospect of being relegated as early as this weekend.

The Black Cats now sit ten points from safety with five games left to play so all is not quite lost just yet, but considering Sunderland haven’t taken just five points in their last ten games, the idea they can take more than ten in their next five – and teams around them don’t pick up any, is far-fetched to say the least.


Earlier in the season reports indicated David Moyes would continue as Sunderland boss even if they were relegated, but fans don’t seem happy with that idea.

Sunderland fans took to social media to vent their frustration at the manager:

The useless ****er. Mind i don't blame him 100%. He took on a **** squad and couldnt do owt with it.

 

Moyes did do something with it, he made it worse

 

I wonder what situation we'd have to be in for him to throw caution to the wind and go all out for the win. Not this one clearly.

 

It's strange but even though we only got 15 points with Mick mcarthy I like him better than Moyes, at least he was a canny bloke who had a laugh and a joke every so often, let's get him back just to get us back up or Nigel pearson if that is ok with Cattermole( a player who passes the responsibility to players continuously, who cannot beat a player which is shocking) and O Shea though, cos this as all happened while they are still here. We have without a doubt went backwards under Moyes no one on the planet can dipute that.

Sorry Comm I just can't agree with that there is no chance in hell we would be where we are now if Sam had stayed so I blame Moyes 100% the useless c unt and with a bit off luck he f ucks off before the end of the season.

Only 1 man i want to be manager next season and it aint Moyes! SKP is the perfect man for the job. He has his badges, has already said he would jump at the chance, would instantly galvanise the whole club and would play a more attacking style of football! Keane got us up in his 1st managerial job so it's more than possible.
I'm sure he would have the likes of Reid to help him and Bally etc.

Eddie Howe,
Chris Houghton,
Nigel Pearson,

And beg them to,

(a) take charge of the club,
(b) get rid of the old, the uninterested and the crocked,
(c) buy whoever you can realistically attract to a systemically damaged club,
(d) overhaul the academy, and finally,
(e) ****ing go for it!!

 

I'd love him here as Moyes' number two with a view for the main job in the future if he's good enough. I think we need some classic Sunderland at the club our identity is all over the place.

Agreed, it would be too risky. The one thing I'm holding any hope for re. Moyes is that his reputation as a long term squad builder is justly earned and will work for us and there's no evidence Phillips has that in his locker.

I'd love to see Arca back at the club in some capacity, top bloke and a big fan favourite. Surely he could work with the LBs and RBs or failing that just have him jog round the pitch before kick off.

Phillips is unproven...just like Keane was.
He knows the club and what we are all about. With Bally and Reid etc behind him it would be less of a gamble than sticking with what we have now!
