Steven Gerrard has retired... legend BREAKING NEWS Former Liverpool and England captain Steven Gerrard has announced his retirement from professional football. Gerrard was linked with the MK Dons job after leaving LA Galaxy but said it came too soon. Here are a few words from his retirement statement: "Following recent media speculation surrounding my future I can confirm my retirement from playing professional football. "I have had an incredible career and am thankful for each and every moment of my time at Liverpool, England and LA Galaxy. "I feel lucky to have experienced so many wonderful highlights over the course of my career. I am proud to have played over 700 games for Liverpool, many of which as captain, and to have played my part in helping the club to bring major honours back to Anfield, none more so than that famous night in Istanbul. "At an international level, I feel privileged to have won 114 England caps and to have had the honour of captaining my country. I will always look back with great pride at every time I pulled on the England shirt."
Good decision. Didn't need to go play one more year at some random club. Have w mini break, get down academy and teach the lfc kids
One of the best players in the world at his peak. Absolute legend. Hope he does well in a coaching role.
GOOD! About bloody time.. Should never have gone to the MLS.. would have been better had he hung up his boots at the end of the 14/15 season. Now, go help the youngsters at the Academy and stay out of Jurgens way until you're ready to contribute!
He should be nowhere near the U21, reserve and first teams at Liverpool, not for years anyway when he's got some decent coaching and managerial experience under him. He's still the past not the future, one day he might be the future again if it goes well and he proves a decent coach/manager
Exactly, U17s.. start with them but liaise with Jurgen in how he wants the youngsters to play, so that there's continuity throughout the ranks..
Steven Gerrard: Liverpool great retires after a 19-year career http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/37972429
Can't blame him for going to US for a year, he wasn't quite ready to retire and gave his family a good experience of living abroad where they would be relatively unbothered as not too many knew who he was. He said he hoped for a coaching role at Liverpool after giving up playing for us but was never offered the chance. Looks like there may be a role for him somewhere in the club as he's obviously had talks with Klopp and who better to be around and learn from. Good luck to him. It would be great for a success story to come out of this, doesn't happen very often.
Steven Gerrard is the only player to score in an FA Cup, League Cup, Champions League and UEFA Cup final. Big game player.
He played great for us whenever he played. It's a massive shame that the players around him couldn't take us over the line for the title.
Meh... He was ok I guess... ... Kidding of course. Greatest player of a generation for us. Sure we had other good players. Suarez, Torres, Alonso, Reina, etc... But only Gerrard was great for us year after year. That he came from our academy is the white gravy on our biscuits.
Definitely not one of the best. He was so good that Rafa shunted him to right wing cause of his lack of discipline. He was a brilliant player, but never one of the best. It's why the biggest offer he ever got was from us and no other superpower
Think he turned down Madrid twice too, believe their president as gone on record as said so on occasion in the past. Given the fact that he'd never go to another PL team, the fact that "other" super powers didn't want him is a bit off the mark. Inter also wanted him when Jose went there.. PSG weren't the team they are now.. Which leaves Juve, Bayern and Barca.. who knows, maybe they did bid/consider him.. To be honest, he should have remained a one club man, reason why I was pissed off when he went to LA, no need to tarnish his reputation by going on an 18month jolly.. If he won the MLS, it would of been a case of, well, its only the MLS He didn't win the MLS, its now seen as failure.. Damned either way!
Just wondering as I am not sure but has Rafa said that was why he moved him? I had always assumed it was because he was such a good player Rafa knew he would do a good job there. How did he get on scoring/ assists wise from the wing?
Trust, or lack of? Maybe, Maybe not.. But I'd like to think it was more of a case, at the time we had Alonso and Didi, later we added Masher, so there was no need to play Gerrard in the midfield when you had such players in those positions already, he was moved further up the pitch to cause havoc, and for a number of years, from 2004-2009 that's what he did.. When those players left and his legs went, he was moved back into midfield to play that deep lying playmaker role. Horses for courses...
