A bit frightening to think that even if a PL club tops their CL group this year, they may end up drawing one of get Real / Munich / Dortmund / Atletico in the first KO round.
We sold out our allocation for Leverkusen today... Apparently they are gonna hand back most of theirs so we could end up breaking attendance records... Again ;-)
UEFA like Spurs in the CL. They'll ensure we won't face any of said teams until the QFs at least. The Goons OTOH ...
Really pleased about this news. Doing it once is one thing, repeating it is altogether something else. I don't think the same pressures will apply to the players and everyone will feel a little more comfortable in the surroundings. Can't wait.
UEFA won't want Real/Bayern/Dortmund or Athletico knocked out too early so we wont get drawn against any of them
If qualification is done and dusted before CSKA visit, then a similar attendance for that game will really put the icing on the cake.
Agreed. I went on the site the other day to get some tickets for a mate and tickets for CSKA are selling very nicely given that there are 2 months to go. I think we'll sell out before the group status is resolved. I watched Leverkeusen really handle Dortmund yesterday and I'll take going into that game needing a win to top the group. They were impressive and this 'double header' is going to see some great football. Hopefully, Monaco and Leverkeusen having to travel to Moscow in their winter will mean they lose some points out there and gives us an advantage from our win earlier this week.
Compared to 'The Wilderness Years' it really is like a dream. 85,000 of us together to watch Spurs in the CL . Even the hacks have decided that it's a good thing , that we made it work despite the result last time and an awful lot of negative press in the pre-game build-up. It is a new beginning. If we stick together, the next few years should see the rebirth of our club as a real force. Going to both and am ridiculously excited about it. COYS!
If Spurs get to the KO stages and draw the pedigree sides, I wonder if you could get a big screen up at one side of the OS and have a communal viewing of those games.
The new UEFA President says he is open to the CL being played outside Europe. That's just a further 2 fingers to us fans who attend matches and won't surprise anyone but he did broach a subject of more interest: "National leagues are too important. You have the Premier League which is very strong." This is what it comes down to - the PL generates money in a way the CL used to but, not any more. Why? Because it's boring watching the same sides play in a league competition where half of the competitors stand next to no chance of getting out of the groups or winning a game. When the weaker teams are eliminated, the same old faces make the last 8 and the two Madrid clubs alternate with Bayern Munich in the final. The refs blow and give free kicks for any incident where a player acts as though injured, especially for the major clubs. The refereeing in our game was lousy and the games are mostly a pale comparison of PL games. Our group this year is the exception. It's not that national leagues are too important, mate. The CL format needs radical overhauling because it's dying a death at the moment.
It's worth mentioning where Aleksander Ceferin got the idea from: The FA. Back in 2008 we had the Game 39 proposal, where Richard Scudamore proposed that Premier League clubs would play an extra fixture - but not in front of their own fans, but in front of fans in China, Japan, The US, Dubai, India - all of which was The FA sticking two fingers up at us fans who attend matches.
1. The same thing could be said of the PL, but at least the order of the PL top 4-6 is not as predictable as the last 8 of the CL etc. We may bemoan the average technical competence of PL teams re other leagues, but the PL is far more of a roller-coaster ride than the CL will ever be. And that is what brings the viewing revenues in. 2. In days of yore, UEFA tournaments were a BONUS for clubs, not the raison d'etre. UEFA physician : heal thyself (you turned the 3 UEFA competitions into the "Champions greed" etc) .
