    Sheffield Wednesday v Charlton Athletic

    Monday 24th February 2014
    7:45pm Kick-Off
    Referee: Mark Clattenburg

This Weekend is a bit of a step into the unknown for Charlton Athletic as for the first time since 2006 they find themselves in February and more just League Football to play for, for the first time in eight years Charlton will be involved in the FA Cup Fifth Round… Of course that year the Addicks went on to reach the Quarter-Finals (where they would eventually bow out) after beating Brentford

Victory this year though can bring the possibility of some added bonuses in a troubled season so far… (1) It takes away the pressures of being in a Relegation Battle, (2) A win could see Charlton have a glamour tie against one of England’s big boys, (3) Regardless of opposition the Quarter-Final tie will certainly see the Addicks given television coverage and (4) Should Charlton end up with another lucky tie against Championship opposition then they are one match away from the Semi-Finals and a trip to the new Wembley for the first time in their history and first trip to that part of London since the epic 1998 Play-Off final against Sunderland.

Unfortunately before fans can start dreaming of the day out at Wembley we of course have to get past our opponents in the current round… Championship and Relegation Rivals… Sheffield Wednesday.

Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup
Winners of the FA Cup on three occasions, Sheffield Wednesday first won the competition back in 1896 (when they were just called “The Wednesday”) beating Wolves 2-1… they’d have to wait eleven years before winning the FA Cup again yet in 1907, the Wednesday won 2-1 once more with victory over Everton… their last conquest of the competition came in 1935 (and the only time they’ve won the FA Cup under the name “Sheffield” Wednesday) when they beat West Bromwich Albion 4-2

Back to the Future now and this is the second season on the trot that Sheffield Wednesday have reached the Fifth Round and Addicks fans will be hoping for the same result after Birmingham City won 3-0

In total this will be the 40th FA Cup tie held at Sheffield Wednesday since 1896… in that time 17 matches have gone to the Home Side… 10 matches and have been drawn whilst 12 matches have ended in defeat.

    The Cup This Season
Both teams have had easier routes to the Fifth Round than most both teams have had scares against lower league opposition, Charlton in the Third Round drew 2-2 with Oxford United of League Two before coming out victorious winning 3-0 in the replay… In the Fourth Round the Addicks travelled to Huddersfield Town once again in a cup competition and a brilliant defensive performance saw the Addicks win 1-0.

Sheffield Wednesday on the other hand started their cup adventure against Conference Premier side Macclesfield Town and after drawing 1-1 in the original tie, Wednesday came out on top 4-1 in the replay… In the Fourth Round they came up against League Two opposition in Rochdale comfortably winning 2-0.

Head to Head… FA Cup Special
To give some fans that slight bit of hope this will be the Fourth time that Charlton have met Sheffield Wednesday in the FA Cup with all three previous matches going in the Addicks favour.

    2005/2006: Sheff Wed 2-4 Charlton (Heckingbottom (2); Rommedahl (2), Holland, D.Bent)
1995/1996: Charlton 2-0 Sheff Wed (Grant, Mortimer)
1975/1976: Charlton 2-1 Sheff Wed (Peacock, Warman; Sunley)

    Charlton Team News
In his press conference prior to Birmingham City last weekend, Chris Powell confirmed that Ben Hamer although still out injured could be fit to face Wednesday tomorrow, should that not be the case Yohann Thuram should continue to deputise in Goal… With no news on Rhoys Wiggins’ injury it’s likely that Cedric Evina will play at Left-Back whilst Loic Nego and Piotr Parzyszek could also be given a chance to perform.

Possible Side to Face Sheffield Wednesday
    Thuram
    Nego – Morrison – Dervite – Evina
    Wilson – Poyet – Jackson – Ajdarevic
    Parzyszek – Ghoochannejhad

    Substitutes Bench
    Philips – Lennon – Wood – Hughes – Cousins – Church – Sordell

    The Referee – Mark Clattenburg
If you need further proof that the Premier League is off this Weekend then the high profile Referee in charge this weekend surely provides that… Mark Clattenburg is one of the more highly regarded Referees in the Premier League at the moment yet is not without controversy… First he was banned from refereeing for a period of time due to gambling problems before being at the centre of personal issues with John Obi Mikel of Chelsea and Adam Lallana of Southampton in separate incidents.

Of course with Valentine's Day being today and love being in the air lets just hope that Mark Clattenburg keeps his cards in his pockets for this encounter.

This will be Mark Clattenburg’s first time in charge of a Charlton or Sheffield Wednesday match.

    Travelling From: County Durham
Matches This Season: 26 (Including 2 in the Champions League)
    Yellow / Red Cards: 86 / 1 (Kevin Nolan @ Fulham)
    Penalties: 4

    A4L’s Prediction: 1-1 (Ajdarevic)

Hate Wednesday with an absolute Passion, rather see them go down than Millwall to be honest or even Palace, can't stand Wednesday's fan with the MASSIVE MENTALITY! So as long as we win I don't care if it's pretty football or we play hoofball for 90 minutes can't stand them and ARGH!

    Did I mention I don't like Wednesday?

Btw cracking thread as always :)

Super thread again, A4L. I said a while ago that if Sir Chris gets us to the quarter-finals he then becomes Lord Powell of Greenwich, so this is what we're all hoping for. While we're at it, if he gets us to the semi's he then becomes King Chris, and will have to do a massive tunnel jump hand-in -hand with V-a-v.
What I also hope for is to see Pete in action, I'd also go along with your team except for Evina at LB, where I'd like to see Fox given his debut. At some point maybe we could see Poyet and Cousins together in CM, they could well be the heart of our team next season.

I agree with FHB. Wilson, Poyet and Cousins in midfield and Adjarevic behind the two new strikers. Nice shape of team we should stick with (no bloody wingers and no bloody Sordell!) although short of either quality or experience in most positions.

Pitch inspection at 10:30 following adverse weather. Disgraceful. Can't they look after their pitch?

If it were cancelled, I'd love to see their reaction, seeing they ridicule us for having a bad ground, I know weather bad, but only a bit of wind ;)

At least we're in the draw for the quarters. Hope the fans en route have heard the news.

If English and German soldiers could play in the mud of No-Man's-Land 100 years ago then we can play on this.

It must have been that pen-pushing, desk-sucking blotter-jotter Darling who made that decision.

"The postponement could mean that Wednesday, who reached the FA Cup final in 1993, face a fixture re-shuffle."

Once again the BBC don't think we are worthy of consideration, clearly they are of the view that SW are Massive, and so deserve special consideration. Want us to win even more than before (if that were possible) when they can eventually sort out there 2 bit pitch.

Chesterfield played today at home, that's 12 miles, surely the MAssive have a better pitch than that

Well said Captain, but there were Scots, Welsh & a fair few Irish in the British Army then. May change next year when the people living in Scotland have their referendum.

Of course, I should have said British.

Doesn't excuse that disgraceful offside decision though...

Hi, GH. Well the stats are that we manage to beat Millwall in one game out of six, and the next game will be the sixth time we play them without a win, so, if TC is a bit more reserved than usual:grin:, it must mean that he's studied the stats!

I know the weather hasnt been as bad over the last 24-hours but quite bad that Sheffield United have managed to get their game on today (at the moment anyway)

Especially when watching their Fulham 4th Round their pitch was as bad as our own...
