I don't get it. How can it be his fault that the act of eating a pie became a betting market? Let's say the bookies took bets on whether a manager waves to the crowd or not, would the manager doing so therefore be a betting scam? How is this any different? It's entirely the responsibility of the bookies for running that market surely. If it's against the FA rules then fair enough he'll answer to them, but to string him up on betting grounds is disgusting.
They haven't strung him up on betting grounds, he's gone because he turned Sutton United's biggest ever achievement into a circus, instead of anyone talking about the team, he made it all about him.
No problem with that, it's the investigation by the gambling commission I don't get. I think we should all chip in together to start our own bookmakers. The only market we'll take bets on is whether or not Ehab will behave like a **** (might need some more specific criteria!). Then when he does behave like a **** he can be reported to the gambling commission and hopefully prisoned. Simple.
You know, you do give the impression of not liking any criticism of our beloved leader and/or the boy wonder. I wonder why.
The club, loved the fact that he had his picture on t shirts, they allowed the press to interview him constantly in the weeks before the game. He was seen as a comic character who did not fit in with the stereotype of a football player. The betting company did not approach him to do the bet and he did not suggest it. How much has he made from this? The club is still in the papers, through it, they were paid by Sun Bet and it is Sutton United who have had all of the money. As soon as the cup run ended, so did Wayne's career, if he had played it would have been his last game. Sutton Utd will go back to being another non league club who did well in the FA Cup. You have to ask the question, why he was on the bench, why did they not give one of their other keepers a chance? He was on the bench because it was good for the club, it got them attention. If he had not had the pasty, the bet would still have come under scrutiny. If the keeper had come off, the headlines would have been full of Wayne as well.
By forcing him to resign they've made a much bigger story out of it than they needed to, that's what has got the headlines and peoples attention. If he just ate the pie and it went no further, people would have just laughed along and the whole thing would have been a funny part of a a great F.A Cup underdog story. They were quite happy to parade him around before the game, purely because of his size, so they obviously were aware of the attention it would get. The Sun has manipulated the club and him into giving them free publicity at the expense of their achievements.
Why are our owners even being mentioned on this thread? Posters moan about threads being hijacked and going around in circles, just to prove a something lost to the rest of us, but actually, for once patty has a point.
I noticed that the Sun's betting company had sponsorship all over the stadium, even on the shirts for that game.
the issue with the GC is that there was a market runnig on a pie being eaten. There was a pie being eaten by someone who knew there was a market on this. There is no proof that he benefitted from this bet but its niaive to think he didnt have someone lumping on from him. The rules are very clear and all involved in football know what they can and can't bet on. Sun bet were silly to do this sort of bet, but look at the publicity Sun bet have since received.
So how is that any different to my ridiculous hypothetical scenario involving Ehab? If it can be considered a betting scam for someone to perform an action completely unrelated to the sport, just because a bookie took bets on it (entirely out of the player's control) then literally any bookie with a vendetta could get any player in trouble. Or take it away from football; maybe the bookies could get politicians who they don't favour into trouble by taking frivolous bets on what they'll wear for example. If Corbyn doesn't wear a tie and the Sun have taken bets on whether he will, does that make it a betting scam on his part?
