WEST Yorkshire Police have revealed that restrictions imposed on Millwall fans travelling to Elland Road could be lifted this season. Lions supporters going to watch their side take on Leeds have been forced to collect match tickets from a motorway service station, under police supervision, in recent years. Manager Ian Holloway has slammed the treatment of Millwall fans as "absolutely wrong". And police have confirmed that those arrangements will be scrapped if a "safety assesment" finds there is no threat of disorder at the next fixture in February. A statement released by the force on behalf of Chief Superintendent Paul Money, Leeds District Commander, read: "There have historically been issues of disorder associated with the Leeds United fixture, most recently down in London, and this is why the fixture is categorised as a higher risk of disorder fixture than some others. "However disorder has not been replicated at Elland Road for some time now and as a consequence we have worked with both clubs and the Football League to reduce restrictions which have previously been in place, including allowing the sale of alcohol in the stadium and reverting to conventional 3pm kick off times. "These measures have generally been very well received by fans and we will continue to look at opportunities to reduce restrictions even further. "We want to minimise inconveniencing supporters as much as possible, but this intention and decisions relating to the policing operating will be proportionate to the threat, and always set against the context of the developing intelligence picture that is worked on in advance of the fixtures. "In terms of the future fixture early in the new year, we will be engaging with both clubs and reviewing their risk reduction measures and assessing intelligence with a view to making an informed decision with regard to the safety of this match. "If, based on our collective assessment, it is felt we can remove the 'voucher for ticket' arrangements then we will look to do so as part of a wider series of measures to minimise the threat of disorder at this fixture."
