Don't forget Targett in this scenario. Two players pushing each other on for a starting place. Bertrand would be a huge loss, especially from an attacking perspective but I see no harm in giving these two a season to see if they can make it to the next level. Especially if we spend the money on more advanced positions
I'm afraid that I don't rate Targett all that highly...I'd much prefer he spend a year on loan to a FL team where he'd play most weeks. And two players pushing for a starting place is good; a situation where we keep shuffling the deck hoping to find a starting LB is not.
This is only my opinion, but I genuinely don't think he's played that well for us yet-very similar to the Bale situation. Yes, he's got raw talent, and a hell of an engine and is going to be a great player, but whilst he's been controlled, calm and skill full.... his distribution can be wasteful and we haven't learnt yet our best way to play him. I suspect he'll move into a more advanced position in the future.... a Fellaini/Bale-esque attacking/floating advanced role.... but more Bale than Fellaini....!
Fair enough, I feel both these lads have proven themselves to be capable at this level. Of course ultimately we want better than that. I think Targett is a very good defender, his main flaw is a lack of pace. As you mentioned, McQueen is new to the defending aspect of the game and can look vulnerable.
Spending the money doesn't guarantee good replacements. Spending it wisely does. That might mean spending £10m on a player we've been scouting who is relatively unknown versus £20m on someone who is better known (maybe from the prem), but there is no guarantee which one would be better. I'm expecting the club to sell the players and then spend 50-75% (made up %, for conversations sake) of the fees, because that is how we have planned to do it. I can't see it being any different unless the strategy has changed or the owners change. I am fine with that. I get criticised for saying people's expectations are too high (not necessarily you Schad - as I'm quoting you on the money bit) but I am seeing people stating we need to spend it all.... as Laces says, some are going to be disappointed.
Totally agree. Watching Palace pay £120K a week just makes me feel concerned for them. Pleased we don't go down the pay anything route, even if it does make players leave that little more quick. Price worth paying,
I don't at all expect us to. But I think that we'll have to accept another season where we're lacking quality in a number of areas in that instance. 40-50m just doesn't go all that far when you have several positions of need.
This is the basic squad and you can add a few youngsters returning from loan or have played more academy than first team. Forster - McCarthy Cedric - Pied Van Dijk - Stephens Yoshida - Gardos Bertrand - McQueen Romeu - Clasie Davis - Hoijberg Ward-Prowse - Long Tadic - Boufal Redmond - Sims Gabbiadini - Austin Targett, Rodriguez, Reed I know there is a couple of inexperienced players in that 22, but apart from Sims I think they're all over 20. So we have the numbers. Just a case of One In - One Out this summer
Going to be interesting in regards to our 25-man squad next season. By my count, we have 28 currently!
Man city now being interest in Mendy. They wouldn't sign 2 left backs for £20m+ so let's hope this happens. Although that does probably just mean he will be off to Liverpool which would be infuriating.
