Correct; she could give money to the club if she wanted to (QPR's minority owner wrote off enough loans to the team to purchase it), but is under no obligation to do so. She could receive dividends, but that's generally not a thing that happens.

This example has been used already, but if I had 250k in the bank and wanted to buy a house worth 250k I wouldn't buy it in cash, even though I could.
I would take out a mortgage and keep most of my cash in the bank for improvements and other investments. Stretching my money further, especially in times of low interest.

It's far easier to acquire loans secured against properties or businesses than it is for acquiring large quantities of chocolate or icelanders residing in South Wales

I've tried to work out what's happening but it's like trying to nail jelly to a wall. People are buying us, then saying the deal's collapsed, then they've bought us again. Can anyone answer the following with any degree of solidity?

Have we been sold, whether to Lander or anyone else?
Are we about to be sold (i.e. within the next two weeks, my current attention span)?

Imagine what those at the club are going through. They will know more than us, but it will affect them more than us....and they have no input on the decision as it is all being discussed in a Swiss mountain lair.

This Lander lot just sound and fee really snakey to me, really bad feeling. Obviously i don't know any more about them than anyone else , I'm just going on what I've read in reports etc. But my instincts say something doesn't feel right.

Some of you worry way too much. Yes Kat would screw us over and just sell to anyone....

I trust Kat, so won't moan until something goes wrong.

I agree. She's earned the right to be trusted.

However, I've just watched a feature on BBC London about Leyton Orient. Extremely well run for a small club by Barry Hearn, who appeared to have a genuine love of the club. Then he sold them to a new owner who seems hell bent on destroying them.

An Italian football "expert" was on talkSport yesterday talking about the Chinese takeover of one of the Milan clubs.
He said it took a long time to complete as the buyers had to pull together a large number investors and loans as they don't actually have the money themselves. The "expert" said that the takeover wasn't well received by supporters as they are very nervous about a consortium of unidentifiable hedge funds and investors whose intentions are wholly unclear. They are also worried that there will be little or no money left to boost the squad and improve facilities.
    Rings a bell doesn't I Think?

In the case of AC Milan, the previous owner had to actually loan the new owners a substantial portion of the purchase price, and they're planning to list it on the stock exchange in order to raise further funds. And now they're the proud owners of a club that has been hemorrhaging money for years, and is likely to miss out on European competition altogether. That cost 470m!

As they say, you can become a millionnaire from owning a football club....as long as you are a billionnaire to start with.

That's the real worry about any prospective takeover of any football club. What motivates any investor to take a gamble like that? With one or two clubs around the world - possibly including AC Milan - you are getting a globally recognised brand, but you can access that through sponsorship.

So why sink money into such a high risk enterprise, when the returns are almost never worth the risk? Unless, like Roman Abramovitch, you want to get your money out of an unstable regime and away from the clutches of a vindictive dictator. Is that what these Chinese investors are doing?

Yeah, I hope so. And actually, having met Barry Hearn once, I'm pretty sure that out of him and Kat Liebherr, I'd trust her ahead of him.

I think it's all about merchandising in the end. The investment is in the club for on the pitch results, but the financial returns are in the commercialisation of the club. In order for that to work the club needs to be successful, and have an angle that makes them special. Southampton FC is the David amongst the Goliaths. That's the angle. Krueger was very quick to highlight that early in his chairmanship. Then we come across as a friendly, nurturing club, with a most successful academy. That's just emphasizing the truth, but that alone doesn't sell merchandise or bring major sponsors to the table. One has to win things.

I'm bound to say that, but for one refereeing error in the League Cup Final, Saints could be a commercially bigger club now. Perhaps the sale might have gone through with less bumps along the way. Who knows.? But one can easily see that the path of a club can go one way or another depending upon a decision made in the 10th minute of the final of a major competition, and/or the inability to score one more goal in one match in a European league, during a time in the club's history when it was in need of at least one high quality striker, because it let two leave and failed to replace them. It takes years of commitment to reach these opportunities, and if a club falls short at the crucial moment they stay unsuccessful and small time. The investors look elsewhere and the sponsors sponsor some other outfit.

I really don't think KL would have put out a statement talking of doing due diligence etc if she then sold to any old company. I see no reason to worry about Lander. It may have been agreed in Nov but I'm sure it takes time for such a big deal to complete.
