They're a struggling side, but always play decent football. Think this is right for him. Hopefully Reed, Stephens, Gazzaniga & Gallagher can get moves. U21 football won't do much for them.
What happened to Les Reed's comments about not lending out our youngsters? Won't this leave our U21s very light up front?
Gallagher is still there, but I get the impression that the club wish to promote Olomola. u21 is probably good for 17/18 year olds, but 19/20 age group probably need to be playing first team football at some level.
Changed his mind when Nicola left (though timing may be coincidental). Nothing wrong with changing your mind if you have a reason to do it.
Yep the U21 league is a joke and the Premier League need to look at themselves. It needs 20 teams to at least give them a game every week. Not sure why Saints haven't arranged more friendlies but lack of match play (and it's worse this season) has affected them. This and training with U18's isn't doing them any good.
Things can change DL. Sign of good leadership if they're prepared to see the other view and change. I don't understand the hang up about the U21s. Anything beneath the first team is a tool for developing players. Some one else will get a chance to play instead. I think Crewe is a good move for him.
Part of the reason that we didn't like loans may have been that we preferred to have the U18s/21s training regularly with the first team. That apparently isn't happening in any instance, and thus there is much less reason to keep them in the reserves.
Thought Pompey were after a striker (Seager could have fitted the bill) but it seems that club like to get a striker on loan who has been injured recently, who has not really played this season and scores a goal one in every five matches. Uum! And I thought they wanted promotion!!!
I think certain players, like Reed and Mugabi for instance, are training with the first team if recent photos and videos are anything to go by. That suggests to me that the strategy has been refined, not abandoned altogether.
Reed's part of the first team full-time anyway, so that doesn't count. Stephens seems to be there full-time as well, but as for the others (Seager, Mugabi), they only seem to be there when we have injuries and need the extra men in training.
Agree on the lack of fixtures being a real issue. I think saints played three games in three months. As for the training. With my incredibly limited coaching experience I would say that you wouldn't want too many players or you dilute the impact of the coaching. Our first team squad is probably bigger than its ever been. If you have a 11 v 11 training match how many u21s would you need?
Odd one this. There were better clubs than Crewe who were interested in Ryan, so to send him to a bottom of League 1 side who have only won once in three months, is peculiar. I doubt he was exactly thrilled at the prospect.
Yep- club were concerned given the wasted loan spells of Gallagher and Stephens. Obviously no guarantees but I believe he will be first choice.
Well, the other odd thing is that its only a month. He was only on the bench in the first game. Crewe have 5 more games this month he could play in. I'd hope he'd start at least 3 of those otherwise its a waste of time.
