I wonder where big Sam was last night? Could be a 10 point deduction if found guilty. That would throw us a lifeline.

This will take time, so Newcastle will be promoted in my view, though bit of a cloud now hanging over the Toon army, but the precedent was set by Swindon, so they could not only get a points deduction, but an automatic relegation to league 1?..............<ok>

If Newcastle aren't promoted , probably someone else will . My straw grasping thought is if West Ham drop out , will we stay up

Basically, the Corsican and Marseilles underworld have been involved with senior officials at Olympique Marseilles. As a direct result of dealings with Marseilles - Ben Arfa, Cabella and Thauvin, have been implicated and are being investigated by both French authorities and the HMRC. It is the French authorities that alerted HMRC.

Marseilles is at the centre of this fraud, have we had any dealings with Marseilles? Ayew boys? Oh wait Go-miss................<laugh>

West Ham could be expelled from the premier league as this is part of the new FFP rules. This would mean two relegated clubs instead of three. Newcastle would be promoted and deducted points at the start of next season.

Seems if there is to be any punishment, it will come too late to possibly be of any benefit to us - from the BBC website:

"The wheels of tax investigations turn slowly - so any sporting implications resulting from these arrests and raids may not be known for some time.

It would appear, on face value, that Premier League points and status for both West Ham United and newly promoted Newcastle United are safe for now.

However this "on-going" investigation risks creating instability and uncertainty for both clubs at a time when they both, for different reasons, need it the most. HMRC investigations of this scale are costly and only undertaken in the most serious of circumstances. This isn't going away anytime soon.

Rafael Benitez, celebrating promotion on Monday, told reporters it was good to work at a club where there's no backroom politics, a not so subtle reference to his tumultuous time at Real Madrid.

With Newcastle having documents seized, and further questions looming for its senior officials, he may have spoken too soon."

When Man City broke the ffp rules they were fined £49m with £32m suspended. Also could name 21 man champions league squad instead of 25
It seems breaking ffp is a UEFA issue not premier league.

Chesterfield seem likely to face stiff sanctions which would deny them promotion from the Third Division after the Football League rejected the nine-point punishment for financial irregularities proposed by its disciplinary panel.

The League board revealed yesterday that it considered the penalty too lenient and has asked the three-man panel to reconvene and reconsider the matter. A ruling is expected in the next 10 days.

The board's dissatisfaction was mirrored at the Football Association, where Graham Bean, the compliance officer who headed the investigation into Chesterfield's financial affairs, threatened to resign after hearing the punishment recommended by the panel.

A nine-point deduction would knock Chesterfield off the top of the table but leave them in the third automatic promotion spot. As things stand, the club would have to be docked 31 points to ensure they cannot make the play-offs.

Chesterfield were guilty of irregularities in recording gate receipts and breaching regulations over the transfer of Luke Beckett, and the League's chief executive David Burns said: "The recommendation to deduct nine points does not sufficiently reflect the damage brought to the integrity of the competition."

The board's stance was backed by the sports minister Kate Hoey. "There's no doubt that, if the League had ratified the penalty, it would have thrown a big question-mark over whether football really could regulate itself and look after the integrity of the game.

"The penalty, which would have still allowed the club to benefit from breaking the rules at the expense of the other clubs who have abided by the rules, is just not right."

Only one member of the eight-strong board favoured ratifying the penalty when it met in London on Monday.

The meeting was attended by Gordon McKeag, part of the panel which made the recommendation, and he was asked to explain the decision. A former president of the Football League, he was on the panel with Frank Clark, the former Nottingham Forest manager who is vice-chairman of the League Managers' Association, and Mark Day, once the FA's finance director.

Technically the same three should reconvene but it is thought the FA, backed by its chairman Geoff Thompson, will press for a new panel. It also wants an overhaul of the existing system, with the FA administering punishments as well as investigating.

The League board will have no say over the panel's second decision but Chesterfield will be able to appeal to the FA. The FA said last night that it would try to hear any appeal before the final Nationwide League games on May 5 to avoid the risk of the season ending in uncertainty.

The reaction at Chesterfield was predictably downbeat. "We all thought it was done and dusted," said the assistant manager Ian Banks. "It's another kick in the goolies." Darren Brown, the former chairman, added: "We felt nine points was perhaps too harsh because we had done nothing wrong."

When the board looked at the evidence there was widespread surprise that Chesterfield had not been found guilty on the majority of the charges. However, those charges will not be reconsidered nor was the board in a position to alter the £20,000 fine imposed.

I found this write up about Chesterfield a couple of seasons ago. Their crime does not seem anyway as bad as West Ham and Newcastle and when you also consider how much more high profile these two teams are it makes you think. Have a read through.
