Was every decision prior to that one correct, & checked by way of video clarification? If not it invalidates the penalty decision.
You're right Ben. Think the ref was right to let play continue. Looks to me (aka Blind Pew ) like the attacking player had his hand on the back of the defender to gain height advantage which may well have "forced" the defenders arm higher in order to keep his balance. Pressure of the blue team players influenced the ref to call for a review. Very dubious to me & yourself. Not Syd though.
For your sake I'm sure you'll be hoping refs don't consult with linesmen before making decisions then, as they take a similar amount of time. I do think a good way to progress though would be to have the VAR review the incident once from each available angle, and if they can make a clear decision give it, and if not the ref's decision stands. Would cut it down to about 15-20 seconds.
I don't think they do It would need someone to do the research, but I'd be extremely surprised if the average length of time taken consulting the linesman was anything like that long
Penalty was given for handball which was clear from the VAR. One minute of game time taken. Cameras are able to look at any incident from 12 angles. From 5 matches this was the only intervention which overturned an initial referee decision. I watched 4 of them. Am impressed so far.
Yeah from all reports worked well. Apparently ref has to wait for ball to go out of play which is good, and the VAR is assessing things as the game goes so can notify the ref if there's any blatant decisions missed. I didn't watch that game though so just going off what people who watched it said, but everyone seems to be happy with how it was used and how quickly the right decision was made.
When the video assistant ref thingy comes into the ruling, I wonder if Sky etc... will get a sound feed into the conversation like they have with Rugby League between the ref and video ref.
Look at the clock in the video above. From the incident to the penalty being taken there is a near three minute difference.
It's not all about the decision. It took three minutes to get the game restarted. Did the game lose the time he played on before it was stopped? I guess so as there was only 4 added minutes & they wasted three minutes changing a decision. Player at the end thought it would turn out to be ****e too. He, quite rightly, wanted to know why the ref wasn't consistent in using the system. It was still debatable whether the decision to give the penalty was correct. As was said previously it's bollocks, does nothing to enhance the match day experience & will be another nail in the coffin.
