Crewe get the game started and attacking the Milton end.

    Forde makes a save already.

Still 0-0 after an hour. What is going on? Is Cook's formation just too cautious. For fear of losing it limits Pompey's chances of winning. Surely PFC supporters deserve better than to see the continuance low-scoring matches that seem to have beset the team ever since Cook arrived.

PS: I feel Whittingham would have done far better with the same players as he has a better footballing brain, alas the club did not give him the time or support that was merited.

Zero shots on target by Portsmouth, 2 by Crewe. Seems a riveting game so far.

Surely it is not fear that is hampering PFC? Pompey play better away and if the play-offs are to be achieved, then a good away record will achieve this. And perhaps close FP for the play-offs due to rebuilding works and play at St Mary's for the semi-final home leg. Leicester did this in their first leg semi (at Forest's ground) against PFC in 1993 I think.

If PFC miss out on promotion, I hope the board go all out to secure Brian McDermott as the next manager.

Crewe one of the worst sides Neil Allen has seen play here and Pompey are as flat as anything. They haven't parked the bus but manage to score.

We've taken more or less no chances all game.

That seems a shocking thing to write about given that the team are aiming for promotion. Is Cook that uninspiring for them? Are there no leaders on the pitch, or too many like Burgess and old man Doyle who do not get on. As for the other Doyle? What has he done? Come back Smith!!! Lambasted when the formation was all wrong for him.

Hard to know. We're a good team on our day. Just not having enough good days. Maybe too many expected to relive past form.

    And not enough guile.

Luton have leapfrogged us with a better goal difference now.

And then we'll get within a point or 2 of third, then there'll be a pathetic performance like this and we'll lose. Repeat until the end of the season and our inevitable play-off semi-final defeat

Very poor game. Disappointing performances by quite a few players. Huge crowd of some 16,800 treated to an uninspiring match.

Crewe played better than us in the second half.

Almost every club has gone from winning streak to losing streak or at least point dropping streak this season. There have been loads of opportunities to catch the top 3 by the pack and everytime it has been blown. Pompey are not the only side who are becoming inconsistent. At the moment the only side doing things right seems to be Stevenage. Not long ago they were knocking on an exit from this league but the other way now they can't lose. Wycombe did it with a run. Exeter did it with a run. Luton, yourselves etc. Nobody seems to want to catch up and the top 3 sides are very grateful for it. I honestly thought we would have been caught by now given our more recent form has dipped. As it is we still have the same sort of gap points wise without seemingly trying. I think this is a bit of a weird season.

It seems to be a division packed with rather mediocre sides, Greeny. I recall season 79-80 when Pompey were in this very division and the quality of football that Pompey provided was fantastic. Only went up in 4th but did the double over that season's champions, Huddersfield. I suppose some seasons you do get a standout team. This season there isn't one. Contrast that with the Championship where Newcastle provide the quality. They have pulled the best out of those teams in the top six who are all over 60 points which is rather unusual.
