Manchester United legend Paul Scholes has revealed he almost joined Oldham before retiring.

The 36-year-old is a lifelong supporter of the club and there had always been rumours that he would play a season for the Latics before hanging up his boots.

He told BBC Radio Manchester: "If Oldham would have been a possibility and I still felt great physically then I probably would have played on.

"The decision I made to retire was just the way I was feeling."

Scholes is now set to take up a coaching role at his old stomping ground of Old Trafford rather than move to Boundary Park.

The final of his 676 career appearances for United came in last month's 3-1 Champions League final defeat to Barcelona at Wembley.

He had previously said he had decided to quit because of his diminishing role on the pitch and because he didn't want to continue as a bit-part player.

"If I couldn't go to another club and play well and contribute to another team then I didn't see the point in doing that," he added.
