Is anyone else on here at/applying to university at the moment? I've just got back from looking at Durham and Lancaster for Modern Languages, both looked pretty good but I'm not too sure which one to go for... I think I might be leaning towards Lancaster a bit tho...
I'm at the University of Sheffield doing Chemistry. I'm not quite sure what you're aiming for with this thread, but one of the things you need to consider when choosing a university is how comfortable you feel in the location. Of the 5 uni's I applied to, Sheffield was ranked bottom for chemistry, but I liked the place, and that counts for a lot. I settled in pretty quickly, and being generally happy makes university an awful lot easier.
I did Modern Languages as a mature student a few years back. I went to Queen Mary, University of London. I can't recommend it highly enough but if you're easily distracted, London can be a big distraction. I agree with DH, you should bear in mind that the place you choose will be your home for four years, well, three 'cos you'll be away for one year, I presume.
Excuse my surprise. No doubt moderators will explain: why is this thread under 'Formula 1'? P.S. This is no slight upon yourself Jersey but I wonder if 'university' has been mistaken for 'first formula' - or vice-versa?
The guy wants advice, if he put the thread on GC they'd mess around and be irritating, so he's asking the sanest board on the site. Nowt wrong with that.
Is this a Formula 1 forum? Hmm⦠I confess I don't see the relevance to F1. Kyle: I am pleased that someone has the sense to ask, and am sorry that 'GC' (whatever that is) would "mess around and be irritating". However, as yet I am still floundering as to what this has to do with F1â¦
This doesn't have anything to do with F1, that's why I put OT at the beginning of the title. It seems like the people on here are the most level-headed, and better people to ask than those on GC! I'm just looking for a bit of advice really, what to look for in a uni etc. from people that have done it or are doing it.
The House Rules clearly explain where off-topic discussions are to be posted. I know we've already had the discussion about an off-topic sub-forum but I still think that's the best solution to this. I don't know about everyone else but I almost never visit GC so I wouldn't see a thread posted there and the location of and posting restrictions on groups make that option inconvenient and easy to forget about. For those reasons I understand why jerseymackem posted this thread here and I expect that this will continue to happen.
I've set up a discussion on The Pits which can take on from here. Anyone needing an invite to join the group, PM me.

cosi, clearly this is off-topic, but the place is hardly a hive of activity right now and the content isn't offensive in any way. As long as people don't make a habit of posting off-topic threads there's no harm in it, it's easy to ignore if it's not of interest to you.
No, that's not correct. The Pits is a group as I described in my post. There are technical restrictions on what you can post and it's off in another section of the forum. Also, as I understand it, it's managed by the original creator so DHC has to give me access, not one of our mods. A sub-forum managed by our own mods and governed by our own sensibilities (hence not subject to the excesses of GC) would be right there on the F1 discussions list and would allow the same type of content as any other sub-forum. Personally I believe the lack of such a facility exemplifies a lack of respect for and/or comprehension of the diverse communities that exist on not606, but I may be alone in that. Finally, if it's ok to ignore the section of the House Rules that explain where to post off-topic content then presumably members are free to ignore the rest of the rules, too.
