Back to Deepdale for a Tuesday for another of those league cup epics you dream about at this stage in the season, lower league opposition in Oldham who we played in a friendly before the start of the season and won easily, however there amy be a bit of spice in this game. During the season Callum Woods received a season ending tackle following a reckless tackle by an Oldham player.
Latics won at Bury yesterday their first win of the season, they have struggled in recent seasons but with the appointment of ex North End player Steve Robinson they seem to have made a good appointment. Robinson is assistant manager of Northern Ireland and was previously assistant at Motherwell. Squad wise, no real star players although keeper Conor Ripley is on loan from Middlesbrough and ex Manchester City winger Lee Croft is still making the odd appearence for the Latics.
Given the lengthy trip to Ipswich next Saturday, expect us to make changes, Lindegaard seemed to pick up an injury yesterday and woul not be surprised if Maxwell plays on Tuesday, Hugill hopefully should get a start after looking good when coming on as substitute yesterday. This is a game we should win but the last time the two met in a cup tie at Deepdale Latics won 2-0 and Latics have not conceded in the last three games.

    Oldham last three games DDW
Next three games Bradford City A Carlisle United H, Shrewsbury Town H

North End last three games LLW
Next three games Ipswich A Barnsley H Cardiff H

A deserved victory although not without alarms, North End did enough to see of a decent Oldham side to make it through to the third round of the league cup with two second half goals by Doyle and Hugill.
Grayson made six changes to Saturday's line up giving first starts to keeper Maxwell and giant Dane Makienok who played alongside the improving Hugill up front. A low key first half with Oldham settling better with Cassidy and Erwin causing the home defence problems with their height, an early effort was cleared from danger by Huntington. At the other end only two efforts of mote an Hugill header and a Makienok header which was well saved by Ripley low down by the post.
North End had to make an early substitution with Pringle being replaced by Browne after the former Fulham player suffered an early injury.
Oldham brought on Green for Klok at half time and the game started to open up as both sides started to look for the win. Maxwell finally had a shot to save, but was slightly luckier slightly later when he parried a a shot which from the rebound was fired narrowly across the face of goal.
Robinson and Doyle then were sent on and almost immediately North End took the lead, a good move down the left hand side led to Cunningham driving the ball into the box, it was just about controlled by Doyle, when he eventually get his shot off the ball squirmed past a couple of defenders into the net.
Robinson then picked up a knock and struggled for a while but once over the knock started to cause Oldham problem.
Oldham substitute Osei came close but his shot was well saved by Maxwell and from the resulting save Maxwell fired the ball down the pitch, the ball was heading towards to corner flag chased by Doyle, Oldham keeper Ripley decided to chase the ball as well, lost out to Doyle who centred the ball where Hugill head the easy task of heading the ball into an unguarded net to wrap up the game.
North End had a couple of chances to increase the lead but did not take them.
A useful work out impressed with Maxwell, commands the area and his distribution of the ball is good, Makienok did well as with giants he likes the ball to feet, the partnership with Hugill did not quite work and with to big lads up front the temptation was to lob the ball long.
We do not shoot, a bit like Arsenal we try for the perfect goal, but job done last night.
Credit to Latics looked to be an improving side and well supported by 500 plus fans who only stopped singing after the second went in.
    Probably now get Swansea away.
