Took this today. End of another piece of sunderland going. Train carriages everything going. Houses etc to replace. Other old memories of long gone sunderland. Crowtree leisure. Mecca/genevives Old 29 ABC.. Odean.. Fairworld cinemas.
Used to get busy once upon a time. Severe lack of places on the front. None really make a go of it for long.
Sadly thats it. Prime real estate. I spotted my new house there today. (in my dreams). Severeve lack of pubs etc. Always has been. Never understood why.
Seaburn fair ground how I miss that, big dipper, airgun shooting stall, throw a hoop( I dinnet naw how many goldfishes in plastic bags I won !), the ghost train, prize bingo for my ma, using them little sliding panels over the numbers instead of a marker great invention, dodgems, throw a bean bag at tin cans (rigged I reckon)the big wheel but that was not there long, then across to the fish shop (past the train ride 1967-8) which is still there for a fish lot about 6d( I paid £15 for 2 last week hehe) or up to the café which is still there for a cup of tea anyone remember the old tramp outside ?. at roker the amusement arcade, the crane in a glass case was my favourite a penny a go I think that was also rigged mind !, electric air gun machine, flipamatic machines to win a bar of chocolate and slot machines, spent hours there as a kid and down the beach, great days.
And some actually believe Monty is a mag. Not a ****ing chance. Bonkers aye but 100% a sunderland lad. A lion once escaped from the zoo (remember that) it was found wandering up dykelands road. Not your average kitty cat.
Dead right when I was younger in 60-70's was thriving with loads of people about - a dead duck now and a shame See the Railway carriages are going to the south coast to be refurbished and displayed there (Ramsgate I think) - we should have been doing this - I blame the Council
The best ice cream EVER. Notarianni's in High street. Monkey's blood an all. They also served some awful hot orange juice.
Fishing at the Block yard at Roker with me Dad. Yes them were the days. And sitting under the very fine curved concrete structure when it rained.
Now my memory has got going: swimming in High Street baths trying to avoid the inevitable turd floating past your head
Anyone remember studio x. Too young to go in at the time. Round the corner from Joplings or should I say Joblins!
I might be wrong but wasn't it further down High Street next to the garths? I remember some picture house down there like.
